Renown Meths burner problem.I am hopeing some of the other Renown engine owners might be able to shed some light on this for me.
The meths burner that was with the Renown I am fixing has a problem that when I light it the wick burns for a while and then the meths seems to leak out and spread over the top of the can so there is the whole top burning.
Attached is a couple of photo of the burner.
Does it look like the original one that would ahve come wiht the engine?

I bet it is boiling. Doesnt one use a little less to avoid that problem?

I've yet to get a Renown original burner but all I've seen have a handle, are you sure yours is original?
On another note I have two home made burners for Renown and Scorpion engines and they both suffer from that problem and on both of mine the meths gets hot enough that the vapour ignites from the vent hole.
As John says they are small in an enclosed space and get hot. A bit of 1/8 pipe coming out of the firebox to get the vent away from the fire may help a bit but I think all small round burners of this type suffer from that problem to some extent.

I am not sure if it is the original.
I was looking at your page tony and saw that all the burners had handles , but they look to be of similar design.
is seems to be originaly a 2 part design that was a jam fit together but I am guessing that it leaked around the join so someone has soldered it together. Now the only way to fill it is to remove the wick, which is a bit of a pain. AM thinking about desoldering it to see what it was like originaly.
Do other meths burners have a vent hole/filler hole.
It does seem to settle down after a while so that may be when the level is getting down.
Thanks guys. Will do some testing and see how it goes.

Wallave and flywheel have original burners so they could provide you pictures of theirs for you to compare as yours does look very similar so I guess it could of lost its handle over time.
I don't know if the original burners had a vent hole but its a good idea to have one else the meths gets hot and starts to vapourise and because the vapour cant escape it starts pushing liquid meths up out the wick hole.
Had that happen on my burner on my renown steam roller which had been modified by someone.

Hi Brandt.
Now it's stopped raining I'll be getting pics up of my renown.
Looking at my burner, yours is definitely original. They have a handle, but it's just real thin sheetmetal.
I haven't run mine yet, but not suprising to see the meths leaking out. They have no hole.
I guess the other option is to make sure the wick isn't packed in tight, so pressure can escape there.
I'll get pics up today. I know my brother made a repro Bing burner, same setup but 2 wicks. I think he put a vent hole in it.

Hi tony.
I am about to head in to the shed for the arvo to desolder the whole thing so I can make it look a bit neater that it is.
I am thinking that if it is a push fit around the side that would allow for some venting as you would only fill it to the top of the base.
My second task today is I hope to get started on your windmill blades.
Which parts do you need the plans drawn up for first as I will be doing some work on that tonight.

Hi Bryce.
I guess the plans I need the most are for the top half of the windmill and anything that hangs off it as thats only only part that is missing that I have no examples of to copy.
I've got examples of the cylinders to copy and have already made the crank.
The large pulley will be tricky but again I've got one to copy.
Thanks a lot for having a go at the bladesand just let me know what you want for it.

Gave the burner a quick clean and it appears to have a very small hole. Cleared it with a pin, but not even the pin would go right through.
The hole may not have been put in at the factory.
The handle is just thin sheet metal, slotted under the top part of the burner. Only solder appears to be at the handle
Sorry for the poor qual

Some sort of venting would be a good idea I guess.
This is a homemade burner for a bing. Similar setup to the renown, with the whole tank in the firebox.
The vent hole is unseen, but between the 2 wicks
It originally had no hole, but turned out to need one

I would guess the pin hole is factory as I have a different burner that came with a pin hole in it.

Thanks for the photos, love the new one your brother made.
I have taken the old one apart and cleaned it up, but in doing that I have cleaned off the corosion on the bottom that was keeping a hole coved. So have fashioned a handle of it that went under the base to cover the hole and also covered over the small vent pipe I added to the top.
will put some photos up in a little while.

Here are some pics of the Renown frankenstine Meths burner.
On the base I have taken the handle over to cover a hole that had coroded through the base, and also added a small length of brass pipe to vent the burner.
Just had it running and seems to have fixed the problem.

Looks good brandt, and I like the idea of the vent pipe

Thanks wallace, was going to make the handle to be the pipe to start with but when I found the hole I thought I might as well make a normal looking one..
What sort of paint could I use on the burner, knowing that it is going to get hot and have meths on it.?

Nice Mod Brandt, that is exactly what I was thinking of doing on my next burner I make.
Make sure you place it in before you light it else you may splash some meths on you hand putting it in and if its lit it wouldn't be pretty.

I guess the Septone brake caliper high temp paints will do the trick.
Only problem will be baking it.
I got a can of K&H brand high temp exhaust paint from Autopro. It's not gloss black. The colour is black ice.
It doesn't need baking. So that will certainly hold up to the heat, and maybe after one or 2 firings it could be meths proof?

Thanks tony.
Will give it a clean and shape the handle a bit tomorrow.
Wallace I have an autoparts shop 300m down the road so will go see what they have tomorrow, need to get some small o-rings as well.

All finished.
Cleaned up and 4 light coats of Hi temp engine paint and it looks a treat. Is hard to photograph a shiny black object.
Next question. Wicks. Have just about used the on that was in it up over the past week testing and messing around. Is the cotton the best type to used or is there something better.?

Have a look on Mamodfan's website as he sells some very good quality wick, just make sure you ask for the correct size.
