Repairing worn Mamod big end.

Hi,

VIDEO of engine with bushed big ends.

I have been cleaning up a twin cylinder Mamod stationary engine.  It was pretty dirty and had had a lot of use.  The piston rods big end was particulary badly worn, the crank pin was 2.3mm and the hole in the big end 2.8mm.  When the engine was run it was very noisy.  The hole in the big end was enlarged to 3mm and a bush was made and glued in.  Following photographs show the sequence of the job.

Regards Tony.

You guys with lathes really piss me off
Well not really, but I do have "head stock" envy  because you have a "way" about you.
You're very,,, "centered" and on the "cutting edge".

Ok, I'll stop.

Well, you'd better 'saddle' up then, latheless one!

Hi,

Just noticed in the still photograph of the video I have set the cranks at 90 not 180!  Silly me!  I didn't notice and it has been run several times.

Regards Tony.

Not usually much of  a problem on Mamods, but F-mann and some other German engines are built with huge big end holes and clatter like no-bodies business.

This is a great idea and process I am sure I will use it someday. Thanks

Hi,

Re positioned the flycrank and tried the ngine on steam.  Seems to perform OK.
