(retitle) New Departure Burner: it's turned out nice again

MamodFan's excellent ceramic wicking arrived today!

Now I can make the third and much-improved New Departure Burner version 3

Here I will apply images and videos of the process and the results.

This third burner will prove a charm thanks to this wonderful wicking.

I'll tell you this: the stuff is coarse ceramic fiber, tightly bound by thread into a fine, stiff, easy to handle wicking.
Only at the end, when cut, does it flare out into a nice, efficient vapourizing bunch of imperishable fibers.

Wonder Wick is designed and made right.
I will be using it in a new way, true, for the wick isn't exposed to direct flame in NDB; but without Wonder Wick I would be nearly at a loss.

The NDB V2 failed because all I had to stuff into its giant tubes was cotton sash rope, the fiberglass otherwise required being just too much stranding work to be feasible.

Even recessed, the heat of the font tips in V2 gradually burned away the tops of the cotton wicks,
sinking them uselessly-deep into the font tubes.

That won't happen again

Cutting Tubing

After the score is complete and clear
the snap is done by thumbs pushing away from you
from either side of the score.
It is a help in prevention of chipped edges to exert also
a simultaneous pull on the glass as you snap it.
It is best to have tape or cloth on your fingers for the count of safety.
Wear eye glasses too for safety.

I bought only one meter of 4.5mm Wonder Wick, thinking that would be plenty.
Well, 13 font tubes required almost all of the meter.

just a jig to hold them in parallel

If I'd ever done this before (each one is a new experience), it might look a bit neater.

Technique comes only by practice.   Brother, I need practice.

But! It's coming along and will be set alight in a few days.

V3 tries for a slotted manifold instead of properly drilled holes

now for the drama shot!

The next step, just done a short while ago: pot the manifold interior with silicone adhesive goop.
a sloppy goop shot goes here shortly

When the silicone no longer stinks of acetic acid (the curing agent),
the bottom plate then gets glued on and then the burner is done,
ready for leak testing and feed testing and lighting up.
That will be a jolly day here--two days from now? I think so.

the demo referenced in the title of this thread:

NDB V3
its first operation in the engine

NDB is the first-ever fully adjustable meths burner,
and it makes no noise, unlike gas jet burners.

Steam control by flame control instead of by throttle
Wallace

That's great Reid. It works well

Excellent video too
Sandman

Great work Reid.

I really like that clean blue flame.

Saves a lot of cleaning and is much more efficient as you've proved.
Reid

Thanks for enjoying the endeavors here,  Sandy and Wallace.

It's so much more fun for me, the NDB,  because I can run continuously (have a feedwater pump of sorts),
and I can suit the heat input to the power output desired,
and so save fuel and boiler water on that account.

As I write, it's ticking over as about 400rpm, working in to a dynamo load.
At that speed, with the flame low and the throttle open,
the D21 runs for about an hour before needing its boiler to be refilled.
The flame of this burner is just so tractable when you want that,

and of course, mon ! she never soots!

Cheers and happy greets to you both,

excellent work reid
Reid

Thanks to all for watching the developments develop!

The NDB V3 was run for about 20 hours, with the engine under load most all of that time.

There was no deterioration of the boiler bottom nor of the fonts' Wonder Wick ceramic wicking, nor of any thing about it.

The NDB assembly is made with store-bought silicone rubber adhesive.
I was concerned, wondering wheter  meths might have an adverse affect on the silicone rubber.
Ans: no, it does not.  Bits of cured rubber stored in can of meths,
inspected on occcasion, bear out that meths will not destroy the adhesive.

Furthermore, study of the RTV data at the Dow Corning site confirms that meths is hardly a problem for the adhesive.

The next version will be like this version, but have more of the same small bore font tubes,
all put in the same row, but in lateral contact one to another.

This will further aid heating of the font tips, which is where the serious business of rapid gasification of the liquid fuel occurs.

The close spacing of the tubes also will allow an even greater heat output, a more homogenous flame pattern (see image below of the current flame's inequalities).

There is no black soot from an NDB burner--only a fine white ash.

the ash accumulation of 20 hours burn time

The ash wipes off with a damp cloth.

Thanks for your interest in the NDB:

a specialty burner allowing full flame control for the toy engine or model engine of the pot boiler variety.

This is open-source hardware design.
There is no restriction on its use, development or production for profit, even, by others.
