S.T.I.A. Purchase

Below are pics of a little flatbase I picked up at the S.T.I.A. The four feet are there, albeit one of them is kinda melted.
It is mechanically sound.

Need to get as much info as possible as it will be a full resto. The previous owner botched it up.

Should the mounting bracket be highland green??
What type of burner do I need??
What approximate age is it??
Is the brass flywheel a press fit??
Any other info that might assist.

Manxman

I can't help with any of your questions but what a little beauty. I can well understand why you got that. Very nice. What did you pay for it?

Thanks Manx. The seller had it on display for £45.00 but after a haggle I got it for £30.00.

I think it was a good buy at that.
Manxman

Night in the pub or that little engine. Easy add one little engine to the collection.
Wallace

Great purchase SM. Fantastic.

It's a MM2 of course, 48-52 model.

Needs a 2 wick burner.

My brass flywheel MM2 has grub screw holding the flywheel on, very small though. If yours is pressed on, with no hole for screw, it may indicate a more accurate dating of it

The green should be the typical light Mamod Green.

Well done, a good buy I think

Covered in all aspects! I didn't get a good look at it when you bought it SM, I saw a glipse, but a definate top buy at 30.00 quid

The only thing i got from STIA was a sight glass, and a great load of memories of course
SPOKESMAN

I remember you showing me that one SM.
James

I remember that! I had an offer of that and my flatbase SE1 for £30 the pair! I said naa leave it mate. Sandy came and I went SANDY! GET IN THE SELLERS TENT QUICK!! THERE'S A FLATBASE MM2 GOING CHEAP

Off ran SM into the tent

Thinking about it I should have took both of them, then the MM2 would have cost me £10, as he wanted £20 for the SE1. I could have sold SM the MM2 back for £10 then!
yosa

Fantastic buy Sandy.

Haggling with a Scotsman? What a muppet.

oldstuff

A flatbase MM2! Great buy Sandman.
Sandman

Thanks guys.

I have to say it was James who pointed me in the right direction.

I'm looking forward to a full resto on this little engine.
Steve_S

That's a very nice engine!
James

Aye, is a real nice little engine

It all comes flooding back very nice James

You have quite a few brass flywheeled engines now
oldstuff

I like that one james, comes with a box, too. Too bad is has a plain old brass flywheel.
Wanna trade it for one my pig engines with a nicely painted steel flywheels?
James

Would be tempted

Bought it for £56 plus p+p. Too much, I know.

So now I got (flatbases):

1946 SE1 (NMC)
1949-53 SE1 (GC)
1949-53 (?) MM2 (boxed, GC)
1948 SE2 (NMC)
1949-53 SE2 (VGC, boxed)
Lineshaft (NMC)
Lineshaft (Very rare, one of last made, only seen 1 like it, NMC, boxed)
oldstuff

That's a most enviable lot, Jimbo...indeed, your entire collection is awesome.
I only have one flatbase Mamod, the SE2. Someday, I want to get a flatbase
Mamod or better yet, a Hobbies, with a brass flywheel.
James

Thanks Chuck

You never know what is around the corner mate

If I see a flatbase that I don't want (as I already have it) at the antiques place or whatever, I'll buy it and offer it you
Mamodman123

My flatbases:

Hobbies SE1
1948 SE2 unfired
1946 SE2
53 SE2
MM1 flatbase
MM2 Flatbase

I have a flatbase Lineshaft aswell but that doesn't really count

Better than none at all Jimbo! Or a wilesco
James

No MM, Lewis was on about the MEC1 and that being flatbases, and I stated that there was only 1 REAL flatbase
SPOKESMAN

How about a Wilesco flatbase . . .
Mamodman123

Oh dear
James

Having a flat base doesn't mean it's "old enough"! I could build an engine today, and I could give it a flat base!

It has nothing to do with age!

Well no, when we say Flatbase we are all refering to the pre 1954 Mamod stationary engines. With its counterpart being the raised base
