Sandman's Table Now Finished.

Hi folks, and welcome to my table.

I decided this year, that I would experiment with my generators including Blue Thunder.

In my first video, I hook up my Wilesco D28 to a strip of flashing LEDs.

I had no idea if the generator even worked, so it was very much a hit or miss.

Here's how it went.

ian.allen2

Very nice. Plenty of power to the lights with that engine.
Swift Fox

Great video Sandy, i'm looking forward to seeing all your experiments with various engines & setups.
mrborinator

Awww that works very well  (-_-)

Good job.

Cheers,
Rob.

We"ll never steaming alone...
Dampfmaschine

Excellent to watch full screen - These LED strips look like fun

I bought that one from young Ross on the forum.

I could do with another couple.
colin

Looking forward to seeing more !!
Ross

Super stuff Sandy! the LED strips work great.

I like the D28 as well it's a strong engine.

Here's the link to an eBay search, you can get different colours, lengths etc... Hope you don't mind me posting this!

Thanks Ross.

It will save me PMing you for more info.

These LED strips work a treat.
Celsius 100

A very impressive lighting display Sandy.
Bugsy

I enjoyed that, Sandy.
The D28 is a great engine and I'm curious about that generator.
It appears to be very efficient.
Good idea using flashing LEDs as a load.

Phil
Les

Very enjoyable sandy, you should have the D28 running the lights on your Christmas tree this year.
Burnmafingers

Your D28 is a real peach of an engine and hooked up to the genny and LED's only increases the fun factor
Ideal set up for doing a ye olde style steam powered disco!
MooseMan

No-one makes videos like the Sandman.....I just love that Ayrshire burr

Aren't those Ray Pulley generators great? Got one myself, I love it! Is that the one you got this STL mate?
kd02

Great setup there Sandy, love the d28,

It came with the engine, mate.

That was the first time I'd actually tried it.
angus

Very flashy (and flashing) indeed
Dave S

Fantastic, its the first "showmans" stationary
Steve_S

The generator certainly works well. It almost looked as if the steam was rising from the LEDs!
Wallace

That looked great
Sandman

Next up is a straight forward test of my Jensen 25G running its own generator.

It does this well, for a time but it runs out of steam after being run on full load for a few minutes'

Here's how it went.

flywheel61

Great videos Sandy, it looks like Christmas already with all of those lights.

Cheers

Thanks mate.

I was expecting a bit more from my Jensen, though.

As you see, it runs out of steam quite quickly under load.
Les

As you say it might need running in still, a great video and plant Sandy.
Celsius 100

A very good 25G refurbishment.Looks a treat now and runs very well.
magpie38

great video Sandy
Freespawn

great stuff so far
kevininasia

Very nice Sandy. Those LEDs have a lot of potential. One could do all sorts of things with them.
Dave S

The 25Gs a superb engine.  I really liked the video great stuff
MI Steam

Great videos and I need some of those LED's. You did a nice job restoring the Jensen 25G.

I can agree to that, Odilon
Sandman

Thanks Guys

My next engine up is the wonderful Wilesco D222 I got from my friend Benchmark. This engine runs like a watch and I was interested to see if it would drive my Jensen Generator.

Here's how it went.

Les

It drives it with ease, another great video Sandy.
RocDoc

Fantastic videos mate!!!

Pete
Sandman

Thanks guys.

I was surprised at just how powerful the D222 was.
Swift Fox

Some more great videos Sandy, the Jensen generator is a true classic in both looks and function.
Sandman

Having seen just what the D222 was capable of, I thought I would give it the ultimate test and hook it up to Blue Thunder.

Here is how it fared.

Les

The D222 is very impressive Sandy.
Sandman

Les wrote:

Thanks Les.

It takes a lot of power to run Blue Thunder, but the Wilesco D222 does it easily.
steamtrack

Great vids Sandy
kusuchi

Great videos, Sandy!

I just have to get some of those LEDs.  The possibilities are limitless!
Celsius 100

The self starting D22/D222 is one of the best in the Wilesco range, confirmed by your enjoyable videos.
Sandman

Thanks guys.

I didn't expect the D222 to self start when hooked up to Blue Thunder, but it did without a problem.
redryder

That is a fabulous way to power a light show Sandy !!!

Thanks,

Gil
Bugsy

It's a great engine, the D222!!
Sandy, can you tell me how many watts the heater draws?
I have a Plan!

I don't have a clue. Phil.
Sandman

Still on the generating theme, I thought I'd try my Bowman M101 hooked up to Blue thunder.

Now I know the M101 is a plodder, but I was interested to see if it would turn it over.

Take off from the counter shaft was far too slow, and from the direct drive, was still only enough to register 4 volts on the meter.

Here's how it fared.

Les

The gas burner did make a difference, it's a pity though it was not enough for the Blue Thunder.
flywheel61

Thanks for the extra videos Sandy, I'll haver to find away to beef up my M101, or maybe I don't want too - anyway a great tour, thnaks.

Cheers

Thanks Chris, more to come mate.

I thought that by using my gas burner I'd get a few more revs from the old girl, but she just plodded away.
Roly Williams

I think the problem is lack of revs, not lack of power. The 101 might just have enough torque to drive the Blue Thunder direct from the rim of the flywheel if you let the pressure build up. That's what the groove's there for, after all.
Sandman

I think it would have still struggled Roly.

It was struggling to turn it over from the smaller pulley.

I still think I didn't wick up the original burner well enough and that may have contributed a lot.
Atticman

Fascinating stuff Sandy and great videos as ever.

I am sure Rolys right, I think its all about the "gearing" here, either as Roly suggests or run onto a linehaft then onto the blue thunder.
magpie38

Nce to see the bowman in action, I must get myself a blue thinder they lok great

that it was.  might try same but with it's bigger brother the D32,       one day.

btw- Sandy your Bowman's nice too.
Burnmafingers

More great videos Sandy, the Jesen 25G is particularly of interest, now that I have seen the light with electric engines.
Nice to see the old boy Bowman having a crack at driving a generator but like you say its a bit of a plodder by nature and all the more lovely for it.

That's strange. One thing the 101 doesn't normally lack is torque!
Mamod58

Nice to see the engines working for a living Sandy.
Celsius 100

A Bowman in fine fettle and an enjoyable video. Were you using a 50mm x 15mm gas burner Sandy?
Sandman

Celsius 100 wrote:

Yes, and I think that's simply not big enough.

If I'd used a bigger burner, I'm sure that would have made a big difference.
Sandman

Blue Thunder continued to intrigue me, so I wondered how other engines might fare.

I chose a very nice Fleischmann that I've had for some time now.

I've only run this one on air up till now, so it's being fired up especially for the STWWW.

During the test I lost the retaining nut for the governor.

See how it fared.

Les

That's pretty good for the Fleischmann.
Freespawn

going great sandy
Sandman

Thanks Guys, I was quite surprised that that Fleischmann drove it at all.
magpie38

superb, every table is getting better by the hour
Celsius 100

Very reasonable performance by the 125/2 and it is in lovely condition too.
The 50mm burner is a bit on the wee side for your Bowman.
Dave S

I really love that Bowman M101, Fantastic
Dauntless

wonderful job Sandy I really like the generator theme!

thanks for these!
Sandman

Thanks for all the great comments guys.

Moving theme now to shelf queens.

The next engine is a lovely Fred Dibnah special edition TE which in my estimation is far too pretty to steam.

I can however let you see what it would look like by running it on air.

So here is one of my shelf queens in action.

Celsius 100

It is pretty and rather glitzy as well.Runs very smoothly.
magpie38

Love the shiney shelf queen video Sandy
Sandman

Next up is the engine that started it all for me.

I had been looking for a working traction engine kit for a long time, and eventually I found a Wilesco black and brass kit.

I've never ever tried it since I built it and I had no idea if it even worked.

So, let's see if it did.

Les

You sounded a bit hesitant about running it on air at the beginning, I bet your glad you did now, I know I am.
Sandman

I was really hesitant as this was the first steam engine I had ever attempted to build and I had never tried it.

I feel great now I know it works.
Celsius 100

Delighted to witness the maiden run of your D416.Good build quality, makes all the usual Wilesco mobile engine noises and runs extremely well.
Burnmafingers

Cracking first run of your kit build Sandy, nicely done.
stenella

Very nice table and video's ... you can see and hear you were having great fun
Dauntless

wonderful Sandy the Kit engine goes a treat!
Sandman

Well I'm going to finish off my table with a few pics of the machines that graced my table on this years STWWW.

I enjoyed taking part immensly, and I'd like to thank everyone for their kind words of encouragement.

So here are the stars of my table.

Les

Great pictures and videos, it was a pleasures joining you at the tables again this year.
Dauntless

Thats great Sandy I loved it mate!
Sandman

Thanks guys, I can honestly say that for me, this event has been the best ever.

Les, as usual we browsed the tables together from the start.

We'll really need to do it for real some time.
magpie38

thanks sandy, your table was a star
Steve_S

Great table Sandy, I've really enjoyed it!
ozsteamdemon

A real pleasure to visit your table Sandy , it made me feel like i was standing right there in the Steamshack !

We will see what can be arranged.
Stoker

The video master comes through again with a suite of visual treats!

Well done Sandy ... Well done indeed!
BK

Top table Sandy, very enjoyable, come over the road and I'll shout you a drink.
Sandman

I'd just like to thank everyone for their kind comments, and for visiting my table.

I've had a great time over the weekend, and I'm so impressed with the quality and quantity of exhibits from all around the word.

I feel quite sad that it's nearly ended.
Celsius 100

A great display of engines for your finale Sandy.
sarfraz

Fantastic table Sandy, especially like the special edition F. Dibnah traction engine.
