It's an SEL Major and it cost the princely sum of £35.00.
It runs well, but needs a little work
There's a steam leak at the whistle end of the boiler that will require a bit of solder and the whistle itself needs the handle tightening.
Other than that it ran fine.
What do you think? Good buy or not?
Here's a short vid. (Apologies to Roger )

Love the vid Sandy! Great engine!
Now did you actually pilfer a bit of audio from the Temple? Otherwise that was a truly remarkable impression.

Thanks Guys.
No Odilon, didn't cheat. That was all my own work.
Just wish I could narrate a vid like Roger.

What a beautiful engine Sandy
Does it still have any of the gold paint left on the boiler?
By the way, that was a much better impression of Roger than James'

Wash your mouth out with soap.
Lincolnshire easy when you've had a few.
James
Well done Les!

For a Major that actually runs very well Sandy.
If you go through the SEL postings elsewhere you'll find we have decided that filling the boiler up to the water level plug is too much for this boiler, and causes that priming problem. The oil will run out quickly as the displacement lubricator is designed wrongly with the exit pipes at the bottom of the body (i.e. it gets pushed through by the steam straight away, and is not replaced by condensing steam like the Roundhouse displacement lubricator). If you have the aluminium pistons fitted then putting graphite thread in the slot will have these pistons working better. It is easy enough to punch the whistle handle to get it tighter.
And of course you need a proper SEL safety valve.
So yes, that was a good buy particularly as you do not see the boxes in any condition very often.

Thanks Chris. Much appreciated.
I noticed that when I applied a little lighter oil to the pistons while in motion, the engine doubled in speed.
I'll certainly check out the piston type I have, as it leaks quite a bit of water.

Great video mate
Sandman
Thanks for all the comments guys.
Went out to the workshop and fixed the leak on the boiler end cap.
I wouldn't have believed the difference it made.
It easily doubled the speed of the engine.
There must have been more steam escaping than I thought.
These little engines are so easy to work with and to strip down that I think I'll just make it my next resto.
There is no lacquer left on the boiler and the base paint is poor.
I think this may be the next Sandman shiny.

Oh that bit of Rog at the end was priceless
I regret that I've still not had time to steam my Moose Major
....too many things getting in the way of having fun these days. It nibbles.

Wonderful little engine and a great runner as well.

Another excellent purchase for the money. Mine is finally on its way, having made a prolonged pit stop in UK. Although very glad it did, as pistons renewed & that annoying problem, mentioned by Chris of oil lubricator emptying too quickly, rectified. A vid will be forthcoming when it does.
