SE2 Restored

Well, continuing with my recent love for wooden bases (and my newly purchased router) I have knocked this together today.

What do you guys think?

Les

  Very nice indeed.

She still has to have the blass plate adding, and then she's finished. Thankyou, glad you like her!

Reminds me of the old jensens, great restoration.

Thanks, I plan on making a few bases like this to sell, But with a darker stain, as its still a little too light with the name plates of the engines for people who need them. wonder if there would be much forum uptake for parts like that?

Also still have to put in my little brass screws and attatch the boiler back to the firebox and then the base
gremlin

to me that makes a SE1a  look better than on the red base.

It does on all the engine, amazing really. I always think the red bases make the engines look toyish.
Sandman

I have say that I don't think the wood base does it for me.

I'd rather see it on it's original base, all repainted and looking tippy.

This is a modification not a restoration.

However, I have to say that it's been done very well, and though it's not my cup of tea, I can see why it catches the eye.

Errr they are toys

I'm with Sandy on this one, its nicely done but would rather see it on the red metal base!

Restored the base too, but decided not to put it on there. Thing is, a lot more expensive engines have the wooden base, and I think some mamods deserve a nice base. But I take your point

While I tend to agree with Sandy, you've done a really nice job on that base. Routers are great tools aren't they? Mine is one of my favourite toys!
whistleman

beautiful!

I like it. I can't make up my mind in the restoration/modification dilemma. I guess I'll take it on a case by case basis. I tend to try to avoid falling victim to the scarcity heuristic and just try to evaluate whether the restorer/modifier has made the engine nicer in my opinion... so I happen to like this one. I admire nice wood bases. I understand why the other guys prefer the metal bases. I guess if some people believe it has more value in its original configuration, it's just as well you kept the original base in case you ever need to sell it. The wood base looks nice though and I'll wager the engine sounds smoother on a more massive platform.
TE1DRIVER

thats divine top job
Dampfmaschine

Think wood looks good on a "display" engine - but prefer metal on one that is for playing with.
Very nice job all the same

Base looks nice, useful things routers!  If wooden bases are your thing then so be it

I do wonder how resilient the stain/varnish will be though if steamed.

Very is the answer to the question

The wood is treated with a nice stain for several coats and rub downs. The firebox is lined with a brass lining, which the burner sits on, stopping most of the heat effecting the base. Finally a solid wax based polish is used making it nice and water resisitant,

Seems to have no trouble with the heat and steam
