SE3 Griffin and George Restoration (clean up)

Ok guys, got the Griffin and George today, after a small wait . We're going to need a little bit of work on the boiler (usual stuff for an SE3). Basically, the plus side of the G&G is that it has a very good base, and the firebox is pretty good too. Now to the bad points:

Dent in boiler on and around whistle thread. Going to need straightening. I have a good idea for that, similar to what people do on dented cars.

Over flow plug thread, not the worst I've seen (I know what your thinking, how could you have seen worse?well I have). Going to need a new thread and plug. This will be ok, I know a certain bloke that does a top notch replacement

Condition over all is pretty good, about the same, well slightly better than my other one. The box is in excellent condition which is a nice suprise, with the Griffin and George label hanging on for dear life

The usual full clean up, and resolder of the over flow and she's ready to go into the collection

Pictures:

Limescaled safty valve, stuck on

Quite a visable dent, and seized whistle

Look at that for a top notch solder job safe as houses!!!

Decal looks quite good

Badge slightly msising, but visable, looking good guys!

Box is very good shape/condition and what have you

G&G label on side of box

Been working on it a little, sorted out one or two problems, will post up progress a little later, as and when it happens

It does Mike, nothing I haven't done before a few dozen times .

Maybe 'Repair' is the correct word . That solder job looks terrible! make you wonder how and why people do it!
Griffin

Nice one MM, the box and G&G label are really nice. Pretty routine job for you

Lets hope so soldered more Se3's than anything else
Griffin

MM, you are the only person that could buy a brand new engine, with the chances that the threads would be buggered

Hit the nail on the head there Griffin!!!

I can't remember the last stationary engine I bought without a broken thread i'm a magnet to them unfortunatly!

It's part of the fun and clean up these days, get the solder out
Griffin

Well done, keep up the good work

Ok, I've started a little work on the G&G. My fist priority was to remove the dent from the top of the boiler.

I could have done this several ways, In the end I used a small tool, through the whistle thread to gently (and i mean gently) prise the dent up and out of the boiler. Thankfully it removed very well indeed, with the thread still intact. Infact it was a lot softer than I thought it would be.

Before:

After:

First job is done no problems there! and now it's as good as new, in a way.

The second job on the list was the back. I needed to remove that bolt or whatever it was . Heated it up on the torch and removed the screw easily enough. The thread is no longer there as I expected, and there is still lots of excess solder on the boiler, but i've tidied it up a little to asses the situtation

Before:

After:

that's it so far . Next task is to measure up a thread and get one made, then solder it in
MTA

nice to know your progressing well!

Well i'm in no rush, I've got one of the hardest things out the way now. Next I'll be soldering in the over flow plug.

Then removing all that laquer will brasso
Dauntless

looking good MM
