Roaring along nicely there Rog.
I have to commend you on your wood finishing skills, the video shows it up better than the still shots.

That looks as if it belongs on there, very elegant and a future entry for EOTM no doubt.

Very good Rog, that thing sprung into life
Great runner and it would get my vote in EOTM

Great vid Rog. A pleasure to see.
Just as an incentive to others. Notice how Roger does a nice commentary on his vids??
I would like to encourage more of our members to do just that as it really enhances the video.
There's nothing to fear, just say what your doing and what you're looking at, and before you know it, the jobs done.

I try Sandy but usually end up sounding like a tit

Beautiful to see it running and you don't have flames a mile high out of the top ? All the SE3's that I have seen running have been fireballs. Great work Rog

Paul, I restocked that brass burner with fresh cotton using lengths from a mop head...I packed them in tight from one end (desoldered to get at it)...also cleaned the holes in the screen/mesh, as many were plugged. I fill it to almost puddling, insert and light in place. Flames will kind of wrap around the boiler itself at max output, but they calm down to stay pretty much in the firebox. I guess what I'm saying is that the burner does what it does without much input from me, but I bet tight packing with fresh cotton does control the output to some extent. The regulator and whistle handles of course get scorching hot, I use a length of brass tubing to turn them on or off.
I see why the SE3 is such a popular stationary...it does what you want an engine to do, and does it with style and grace. I really, really like it...ran it 3 times today in fact!
cheers,
Rog

It's definitely been improved in Indiana... that's a beauty Rog!

Still makes quite the SE3 racket, though rather more mellow.
I, too, always pull out the pistons and coat them, as well as putting a good shot of oil in each cylinder.
Very nicely executed, Rog. You have a gift for the finishing touch, and everything that comes before it

Well done Rog.
just to add (not hindering i hope). Have an enginner put a groove in rim of f/wheel - lamp will glow more brightly. just a thought........

Thanks guys...if I didn't mention it earlier, I used to refinish a lot of household furniture, so kind of know how to bring wood out to it's best advantage...maybe that former life leads me to want wood based engines, I just think they look prettier.

Clinton, I did try another flywheel with a groove in the outer rim and it seemed to result in LESS light output. Gotta give that one a think again as I have several engines with larger flywheels that DO power generators off the large flywheel outer rim (Jensen 51 replica for example). I also need to experiment with bulbs a bit, it is amazing how much difference there is in light output depending on the bulb chosen.
cheers,
Rog

AAAAAAh ok. that's weird!

It realy depends on the power of the engine Clinton.
By using a larger flywheel your gearing up which in thereoy gives you more speed (and a higher light output) but in practice the engine needs more power to turn the dynamo (as it doesnt have as much of a mechanical advantage)
It all depends on your engine. If the engine has a wide power band then it will no doubt be able to power a dynamo at a higher speed with a larger flywheel

thanks Jim. most interesting! I don't mean to cut in your thread Rog.

No problem Clinton or Steamyjim...I struggle at times to understand why the pulley ratio on one engine doesn't deliver the same results on another, but as Jim points out...it is heavily dependent on the engine's power band. Again, fun to experiment with however!!

My goodness Rog, I can't believe that that's the same engine....I love what you've done with that - the cheeky decal's a nice touch too!
