SE3 restoration pics

After several weeks, I've finaly finished my restoration of the SE3 engine

When I started, I got this:

it was the SE3 with the unusual crankshaft:

There was paint missing on the basplate and firebox, like you can see on this image:

I stripped the engine totaly down, and repainted the firebox and the baseplate.
The result is:

is this the first nut and bolt SE3?

all it needs now is a extra boiler strap, and maybe replace those screws by eyelets (however, for mainenance reasons, the nut and bolt construction might be better)
One thing you might notice is that the boiler front still looks like crap. That's because the accident I had with the vinegar and salt mixture. I've polished it a lot, but can't seen to get rid of it. So if there ever shows up a real wreck SE3 on ebay, with a good boiler, I might buy it and exchange it for this one.

I still got to test if the engine runs, but I'll first give it some more time to get the paint hardened.

looks great erik!! the whistle lets it down though

Excelent job erikl
Looks like it just came out of the Mamod factory
you should replace the whistle
erikl

a new whistle is on it's way to me (from forest steam)
I managed to get the brass of this one better, but the iron part is just full of rust, can't get that any better.

Looks good erik!

For the end caps you might have left the boiler in vinegar too long

I left the engine in the salt & vinegar mix for a few hours, but I came home late that night, and left it to dry overnight. I shouldn't have done that, because now the print of the paper towel where it was standing on is some way corroded into the end cap of the boiler

Well, at least that was a good learning experience: Never put something in the salt & vinegar if you don't have the time to take care of it when you should take it out.

I only leave it in there for about 20 mins, then rinse off with warm water straight away

May polish out with wadding?

A gentle rub with plenty of brasso and a Dremel with a felt pad will bring it up perfectly.

I think I use the less stong vinegar type, I use the one my mom used for the washing machine. Might use the normal one next time.

Use it in place of fabric softner, cheaper and works just as good.
erikl

it's this stuff:

I think it's aactually the same stuff people use in dressings. so I should use the stronger one you get in green bottles?
Mamodman123

Malt vinegar, the stuff you put on your chips, that's the only liquid you should put on your Mamod! apart from water, just vinegar!

You don't need compounds and things like that! simply no need, just wadding is needed. Don't use anything that could potentially scratch or mark the boiler. Traditional methods are the best.
