I have a sneaky suspicion that this one will go over the estimate a little bit
Lewis

same here and it has a modern safety valve

I'm going to that auction in Rugby, anyone want me to bid on their behalf drop me a PM

Yes!

best get saving up then mm

That first one is a bit old, so can't be worth much

Take along a fiver and see if you can get it for that.

MM remember the 20% or so buyers premium!
Lewis

the se1 was part of malins collection
Roly Williams

What I don't like about these auctions is that the auctioneers extract a hefty buyer's premium - in this case 17.5% + VAT + 2% extra for paying by credit card. Mind you, if this particular item went for it's estimate, I wouldn't mind paying an extra 22.5% OTT!!!
Mamodman123

I won't go stupid on anything Mike! I have my head screwed on when it comes to money.

Yes, on the SE4. If you're bidding seriously you'll probably go way above my bid. Good luck.

Bring it on!

I'm a serious collector myself. Thankfully the SE4 goes before some of the other flatbases, so if I don't win that, on to the next lot of Mamods

Got to keep my head screwed on though Lewis. I like the look of a few Mamods. The Bowmans don't interest me too much...

that happened before at a PC auction!

I've got enough cash..I can afford the SE4 and a whole lot more.. but I won't go silly on it. Just got to pencil in some back-up plans, and sort my maths out

Like I said, if anyone is interested in bidding on anything i'll happily do so!

yes my dads mate bought a spot on tractor off vectis and it cost him somthing like £520 in the end
oldstuff

Nicely spotted, Lewis! Well, MM and Roly good luck to you both. But do you
guys realize what your dealing with? As MM said, it's one of the nicest ones
he's seen. Experienced collectors will tell you to buy the best and that is hard
for most because the best costs lots more than the average. Yet, it pays off
much better in the long run. Miracles can and do happen, but if they were likely,
then they wouldn't be miracles.

(warning...oldstuff lecture follows)
MM, this is not an event to be repeated again in case you screw it up. Leave the
logic at home. If, as you say, you can afford this...then don't leave the place with-
out that engine. This is an investment, whatever you end up paying it'll be
worth more next year and more than that the following years. But unlike stocks
and bonds that sit and grow unseen at the bank, you'll be able to take this one
out and steam it, talk about it on the forum, photograph and showcase it on your
website. There are times in life you can look back on and remember it was the
best you ever felt. Money's not really worth talking about when it comes to that.

I'm pulling for you, mate. Just be careful driving home afterward because you'll be
high as a kite and thinking about your new engine instead of the road!
Mamodman123

Never a truer word spoken Chuck

If i get this job at Triumph i'll be spending most of my first pay packet on this engine! If I don't get it then thats destiny I guess

On a brighter note my 19 year old car just flew through its MOT without me having to spend a penny on it So i'm pleased

There's always Gambler's Anonimous.

If you play the stock market you must accept the ups and downs without complaint. I've no sympathy whatsoever. If you have that much money to spare you should be spending it on something sensible - like steam toys

Sorry for the off topic post, I'd had a bad day (and a few drinks!). Most of that money is in my pension fund so it's got another 30 years to recover. Just have to look on the bright side: now's a good time to buy!

And yes I must get more engines, but I'm not doing it for investment purposes. Unless you count investing in fun as a reason (which sounds pretty good to me!)

No need to be sorry mate.

Totally agree re investing in engines. Far from the ideal investment, but a hell of a lot of fun.

Very true.

I think the best thing re it being a investment is that if you ever get bored of the hobby, or for some reason have to sell them, at least you won't lose money, in most cases.

Not that I'm planning to get sick of it
flywheel61

As I've said before I did originally buy for investment, but since finding the forum this has changed. There are still some I won't run but I certainly can say running them is a lot more fun than just looking at them, . Not to forget the great company and advice that the forum brings to beginners like me.

Cheers

MM,

It's deffo a nice engine, mind you, it's also seem some action i.e the orginal safety valve is no more (& looks like it's been replaced with a 1/4" valve?), the soldering around the steam 'dome' looks a little rough, the counter shaft is wrong, the screw in the burner isn't orginal & the steam pipe/union nut looks a little bent on the piston closest to the boiler.

That said, go for it, as the majority of the above is deffo cosmetic & well within your repair capabilities

So go for it

Darren.
Mamodman123

As you said Darren, within my bounderies of repair jobs. I had noticed the small problems, hoipefully it will put a fair few off. That valve is far too small, but thankfully I can sort that out!

Cheers for the pointers, the counter shaft is really long

SPOKESMAN

Any SE4 is nice - Id take that with its faults . . . who wouldn't!!

Mine hasn't go the original whistle . . . but it looks OK. Strange how the base and engine frame are darker - maybe made up from bits!!!
Mamodman123

I should think the faults are fixable....Although I'm not going to apply too much heat to the steam dome, does anyone know if these just sit on the boiler or screwed in?

If the steam pipe is broken then it will be a little worrying, looks a bit bent on the engine frame
SPOKESMAN

Disturbingly I have a pic to hand . . .

I think they are soldered.
Mamodman123

Need to be careful when soldering around there then...If anything I would clamp it on if i'm soldering it

I'll see what it goes for on the day, if not then I have a backup
Lewis

yes a backup mm an engine he wont tell anyone about

Don't get too excited about the safety valve bush. Although my SE4 has the larger diameter hexagonal safety valve (p49 in the bible) my SE3 is fitted with a smaller diameter bush that will take the present Mamod valve happily. The 1937-40 SE4 on page 50 seems to be fitted with the same valve as is the minor 1 on the same page. Oddly the SE4 prototype of ?1946 has the larger hexagonal valve. Perhaps it was an old boiler they had lying about.
Incidentally all the Bible pictures appear to show a hexagonal level plug whereas both my engines have a small slotted screw. I know al least some of Steves engines were extensively restored and may well have had a more presentable filler plug fitted. Does anyone have any hard evidence one way or the other?

When I steam my SE4 if prefer to use an MM1 safety valve which fits a treat.
SPOKESMAN

As per Fred's SE4 - mine has a slotted dome head screw as an overflow plug.
Mamodman123

Well all the engines in the bible, all the SE4's and Hobbies engines had the hexagonal nut for the overflow! Might just be a coincidence Fred? He has one of the first SE4's and that has the hexagonal nut, Mikes the mamod badged SE4, a bit later has the brass screw. Why would they change it?

My se2 engine & se3 boiler both have the hexagonal type valve, as do the pics that phantom posted a while back. A bit of a mystery, but both hobbies & mamod were very good at using up left over bits n bobs, so it may be just a one off.

My SE3 has an odd size safety - something in between the 1/4" and 3/8". Could this be original or a replacement? It looks like the Mamod style.

The SE3c, which has a boiler from an SE3, has a 3/8" one.
