Security At The STIAHas anyone given any thought keeping our displays safe while on show?
Things like Bowman oiler taps, tops and burners are very much saught after and would be a target for unscrupulous passers by.
I was thinking of selotaping these items on.
It may not look nice but it would make them difficult to pinch.
Am I getting paranoid?????

I don't think you're being paranoid SM. It gets very busy at STIA, lots of people milling about around the tables, and not all of them will be as scrupulous as we would like. I think it will be much easier if you're on a table with other people... more eyes to watch out. It must be hard work for people on their own to stay alert.

I don't think you are being too paranoid, afterall you can never be too careful.
I think we'll have more than 1 person minding the table at any one time.
I don't think I intend anyone to get within touching distance of any of my engines

Its a valid point SM although selotaping things on may damage the paintwork, but would be fine for brass items I guess although you may end up needing to remove the sticky residue after you remove the tape.
How about looking if you can use a fine wire to warp around them and tie them inplace instead. Won't look as bad as tape and wont leave a sticky mess to clean off.

We're all set out togther - so 2 or 3 of us at the table as a minimum at any one time should suffice. A valid issue though SM - Im bringing several £100s of pounds worth of kit, like many of us are.

Just keep them all steamed so they are too hot to touch.

The wire is a good idea Tony.

You're definitely not being paranoid SM, not at all.
After a story I heard about a Model Sydney Ferry builder I would be on full guard. I posted that story on the off topic board a while back.
From my experience of going to displays for cars, and entering them, these were the general security rules.
1) Have someone watching your car at all times. (this should apply to all your engines)
2) Don't give your address to anyone you don't know. If anyone approaches you claiming to be from a magazine and that they are possibly interested in a photo shoot of all your car at a later date, ask for ID showing proof of employment at the magazine.
Even then, discretion is advised.
I'm not sure, but I assume there could be photographers from model mags at the stia, so be careful.
3) When leaving, watch who follows you out, who follows you as you leave the park, and so on. If there is any suspicious activity, pull over, divert, and go from there. DO NOT DRIVE STRAIGHT HOME.
Of course, this too applies to model steam, when leaving in your car. For those of you staying in motels, then keep all your engines in bed with you
Oh, and if there is a perimeter around your engines that viewers can't cross, here is a good slogan:
"Treat this line like your mother in law, don't cross it"
I always used that one
In all seriousness, take care with it guys. I have entered plenty of car shows, and been to plenty, and I have seen the extremes of people who I'd call absolute bastards

Security has to be considered SM. Hard to believe that fellow enthusiasts could steal somebody else's models, but they really do.
As many pairs of eyes as possible is the key. I'm not showing anything, but I'll be happy to play minder if anybody needs the loo or anything.

That would be great Yosa.
I'll have to nip away now and again to take shots for the movie. I'd feel a lot better if there was another pair of trusted eyes looking after my engines.

I do not really want to think about this, but if Andy K is there do you think he will be looking for trouble?
Can we be prepared if he is?
Seems like the sort of person to bear a grudge...

I'm more concerned with keeping my oiler taps safe.

He's not going to annonce who he is infront of several 6 foot plus men at a steam event, who generally don't like him
He'd keep himself quiet even if he does go (which we'll never know anyway)

MM, me and you are ok, I am taking a tape or something arms distance away from the engines to keep people away from the table.

Not a bad idea James, especially when we are running the engines. Don't want people too close

We have had stuff pinched at STIA, most notably a pre war meccano engine a couple of years ago. The dealers have a rather laid back approach, they have this problem all the time nowadays. The only real defence is constant vigilance, never leave your display unattended and keep a beady eye on possible villains. The problem has been eased recently as we no longer have free entry which means that the villains are dedicated thieves rather than opportunistic teens but this merely means that what is stolen tends to be taken for its rarity value rather than its availability. Burners are particularly at risk and should never be displayed at the front of the table.
I'm sorry things should be like this but it seems to be the society we live in. Once you rubbish organised religion and the fear of hell fire there is really nothing to encourage honesty and fair dealing.

There we have it chaps . . .
Are you saying Fred that engines on display should have their burners removed? Or as SM has suggested wired in?

Worth thinking about I suppose. If you aren't going to fire them then may as well keep them stuck down i suppose
Especially the older ones! wick burners etc!

I've been thinking Mike.
I think I'll tie mine together with fishing line and leave the burners off. Maybe take the oilers tops and taps off as well.
Won't look so good but observers can still see the engine.
Just a thought at present.

Aye, depending on space may dictate how many engine we have on show at any given time - also how many members we will need to police it!

I think if we have a lot of people watching and keeping people at a safe distance would be fine! Maybe if it gets too crowded put some away?

I don't think we need to be too drastic, just everyone keep an eye out for suspicious characters and keep a close eye on your own and everyone elses engines. That way I don't think we will have too much trouble.

Screwing things to the tables would indeed be frowned upon. Boards, planks, etc. we have no problems with. The chief defence against tea leaves is constant vigilance. The more people on alert the better.
