Seeking opinions of the IP Ezee Rolling StockI am considering the Coach and Guards Van kits, I know that a lot depends on the builder ( wold be me ) but how good or bad is the undercarriage, wheelsets ets, I would appreciate input, the price sure is good compared to Mamod Stock but is this a case of getting what you pay for? Or does it have potential for some good inexpensive rolling stock?

The IP Wheelsets are rather good, axleboxes are white metal and look fairly good painted. The gearbox is just by means of nylon worm gear, motor is fairly small but up to the job of powering the little loco.
For the money, you can't go wrong. Extra details, lights, lamp brackets, exhausts air filters, door handles, drop light, glazing etc will really add to the look, but probably end up doubling the cost of the loco if you add a lot of detail!

The Coach and Van dont have motors, but I think you answered my question.

I guess that it works for the Water Closet of Steam
Does anyone on the form have any of the Wagons?

I have the rapier loco, it was the easiest kit I have ever built!

All good quality stuff!

I think I might buy a couple of the Wagons in August then. I have been looking at various other makes of Cars/Vans/Wagons whatever you wish to call them and the IP Ezee series sure seems to be of the best price and something that one can add details to as time goes on.

have you considered "Binnie Engineering"
they sell wagons from £4 each and £1 p&p on international orders ANNDD you can pay via paypal?
|

they are very light and delicate though, remember when I tried them behind my Millie? they fell apart so I dont thing they would go well behind a mamod

Put a peice of cling film in the skip, to create a plastic wall.
Pour in a small amount of plaster just shy from the top.
wait for it to dry
pull out using cling film, paint and glue rocks on top to make it look industrial,
a drop in pop out wieght that looks the mutz

yes but when they are loaded and they go round corners at high speed (mamod speed) the tippers tip right out of their cradle

They look interesting, but I dont see Passenger Coaches or Guards Vans. I also looked at some Accucraft items but the ones I saw do not negotiate 42" diameter curves. I think that for what I want at the moment the IP kits look most promising. I would prefer a bobbed caboose, but the guards van seems to be the next best thing.

Where do you get them for that price? I see the tippers for £8 at a few places but none for less.

You have to order straight from peter.

I dont know him so I might have to wait on that one.
My curiosity is getting the best of me, what I think I am going to do is buy one coach at a time and start with the 2 Compartment Passenger Coach,
http://www.ipengineering.co.uk/page22.html
It costs more than I really want to spend, but it also looks to be so much nicer than the Mamod Coach. Does anyone here have one? I would love to see a better picture of one.
It probably will be August before I get it though.
Please gove me your comments opinions etc, I need to either be encouraged or talked out of it.

Id get 1 of there newer laser cut 1s John, they are basically the same just better!
http://www.ipengineering.co.uk/page97.html
and they are easier to build by miles
|
johnreid

I was thinking they were about the same but the one I was looking at had more detail castings. This is why I am asking for input.
|
pauly

well John they are a b***h to make, they require lots of cutting and tons of sanding and they are usually warped
thats why Id go with the laser cut version, you wont have any problems with them.

With my current eye situation, you make good sense, plus that one is a few pounds cheaper I see now that there are differences, I assume the more expensive one is just routed, are the sides smooth on the laser cut ones? Or have they laminated some parts then?
That less expensive one is almost $60 delivered and still in kit form. However I see that it is potentially a real nice piece of rolling stock. Paint or varnish? Hmmmmmmm

no they arent laminated John, just plain wood
the only sanding need on them is on the burnt edges so they dont show up through the paint work.
|
johnreid
|
Is this a picture of the one they based it on or is it one of the kit?
It looks like it has depth, if just a flat piece of wood, it might be a bit expensive.

it the kit John, not expensive

CoachesHey, Youse Guys, If it was me, I`d buy one and build it but first
trace out the Parts of a good Card and use these Templates to build Further Models in 2mm Ply making corrections as you go to suit your Railway!.
Works for me,

John, they did a review of the IP Ezee equipment earlier this year in Garden Rail magazine, I can email you the article if interested.
Been looking at the IP laser cut carriages myself but don't know too much about them. Not cheap but they do look very nice. However for about the same price you can get one of the ready-to-run Accucraft Isle of Man 4-wheelers.......
I think the IP equipment would look great behind a Mamod but they might look too small behind a larger loco such as Caradoc.
Brandbright also do some nice coach kits starting at about 30 quid. Again, I've no experience of them myself.
I wish I could find some pics showing these coaches with different locos so I can get a better idea of the size!

I would really appreciate the article, my email is at the bottom of each post, jut hit the EMAIL button
I suspect that I will be getting the Laser kit, in a month or so, at that time I will post pictures.
My two Locos are both Mamod, a SL3 and The New Mamod Train.

Has to be either two layers or has been routed too, $57 isnt really inexpensive for me. However it looks to be worth it.

I found a little extra cash, so I ordered the Laser Cut 2 Comp Coach, Tried to call them but kept getting a error on the phone number, must be an International thing as I get that on many UK phone numbers, I ordered via their web page, no padlock shows up and no https web address, I wish they had a secure site for ordering. Still waiting for some kind of order confirmation. Postage is £10 so the price is just over £36 or $56, not cheap but I am sure it will be worth it, now to decide, paint or varnish,

I really like the look of their new laser cut kits. It seems that they are pricing them less than the old kits - bet they won't be selling many more of those!
I very much fancy a rake of four compartment bogie coaches to go behind the Fairlie, But I cannot justify the spend and I have other projects to finish first!

I ordered it, but it has not been charged to my Card yet, I guess they are waiting for the exchange rate to hurt a bit more So far it has gone up 3 cents on the pound since I prdered it. Wait long enough and I might not be able to afford it

I missed this thread, good choice choosing the lasercut ones. The routed panels on the old kits sound great in theory as there is no delicate overlay to glue on. The only problem was that there are a lot of machining marks where the router has routed out the panels, which are a real pain to sand.
The little two compartment coaches look great. I much prefer the smaller stock as it is so much more typically narrow gauge. The white metail door handles on the IP Engineering kits are a little hopeless and you're much better off with some cast brass ones.
Brandbright kits look great, and have a lot more detail than the IP Kits, you can of course always build up on the kit and add lost wax brass castings or white metal details as there is no end of bits you can add to these models.
