I was wondering about the fireboxes too, they have more of a dull finish that is rough.

SEL fireboxes have a wrinkle like effect on them. VHT do a range of wrinkle-finish paints. However, they are only rated to 175 degrees C. and I don't think it stand up to many firings.
I reckon it will look just as good with a heat proof black of some sort.

Try MGB dashboard paint. The finish is exactly the same.
From a classic car parts supplier.

Mamod use wrinkle paint on the new William boiler, which is gas fired. So there must be a suitable paint available.
Reading online this wrinkle paint is used on valve covers, like Ferrari engines. It is also cured by placing in an oven, and apparently works best if painted onto bare metal, and not primed metal. The VHT Paint website is down for relaunching at present.

How hot does an SEL firebox get?
They`ve only got a pifflin little 1 or 2 wick burner.......

I think it is not a case of how hot they get, but rather the direct contact with the meths flame. A few Forum members including myself have had fireballs from these burners. And they lose their coating of gold paint on the boiler over time and use.
I guess best option is wrinkle paint on outside of firebox, and a much better VHT paint on the inside.
