SEL MajorFinally got my SEL Major running this afternoon. Had to retap and die the piston and rod, and resolder the oiler. Took some starting... eventually I switched to a fuel block burner, and got it going. Is the single wick burner I have with the major standard ? I just can't seem to get enough steam generated ?

You should have a two wick burner for the Major.

Thanks !! Make sense now. The previous owner had replaced one of the wick holders with a bung. Didn't suspect anything until I saw your pic. Looks like a bit of diy is required !!

Les, you have a small hole in the burner between the 2 wick holders. Is that an afterthought fix to try and stop the fireballs that these burners can cause sometimes (i.e. another vent hole as the ones on the wick tubes are not effective enough)?

That was already there when I got the engine, and I have just checked my other two and they do not have the extra hole.

I guess that means Yes then.

Yes, but not by me.

Do you notice any difference using this burner?
I've taken to only filling my burner with 10mls of meths which seems to have stopped any fireballs. I suffered it on a single wick burner, but believe that was due to the wick tube being inserted upside down (it was my 1st SEL & I did not know any better then).

Yes, it is better than the other two.

Are the SEL Major burners rare?? I haven't really seen that many!

Just like a lot of Mamod engines, and lots of other makes as well, these burners go missing when they've been stored in the loft, garage, shed, etc.
The 2 wick burner was also used in the 1540 Standard engine as well.
Only replica SEL one I've seen was a single wick burner from Chasteam, with a separate filler cap.

Now this burner is exactly how mine looks ..

Is the single wick burner the same as the double but with a filler lid instead of the 2nd wick holder ?

This is a single wick burner, smaller than the double and you have to remove the wick to fill it.

Thanks. At least I have one of the holders to model my DIY version on !
