SEL Trio!

It's been a busy week on ebay I've managed to get these three SEL engines of the ol' ebay. They were a grand total of 10 pounds each       . I have the whole range but they need some work.

Unfortunatly all have been badly repainted with a paintbrush   straight over the old paint, so all have to have a full restoration. None have the gold paint left so i'll polish the lot up. A couple are missing parts, I need a steam dome, and a safety valve thread and valve. I'm sure I can source them from somewhere. Apart from that I can get them up to scratch.

The gruesome three

The Junior, which needs the steam dome and steam pipe

The little Minor engine, this one is ok, just needs a full repaint!

The standard, needs the safety valve thread, but it's do-able.

Crudely painted!

Not bad for the price, i've got the whole stationary range now I think. Minor, Junior, Standard and Major. They should look good when finished. I'll make a start on the Minor over the weekend I hope   Will keep you lot posted
bessytractor

I aint got a burner   not even one between four
Les

They do look good, well done.
Even I haven't got any red base SELs, but if you are after a safety valve Barry1946 makes reproduction ones and he may even have a
SV coller as well.
Wallace

Great buys MM.

Good price too
Nick

Are you finished with them yet?

They look great and after seeing your work, I think you'll have no trouble with them.
Manxman

Great buy MM and they will keep you out of trouble for the next few weekends. I'm looking forward to seeing them finished and all 4 engines in a pic together.
Les

The standard has an extra meccano pulley instead of a small pulley.
Sandman

Smart buy MM.

Nothing there you can't handle mate.
Les

SEL Safety Valve.
The one on the left is an original and the one on the right is a Barry reproduction.

Mamodman123

I'll PM Barry later

you see the engine in the second picture? it looks like it has a safety valve but nothing can pop up on it   its just like a fancy bolt

I can get cracking on the little one real soon
steamyjim

Very nice MM!

I heard that some SELs were fitted with fake safety valves that didn't work but looked like proper ones. Maybe you have one of these?

I think I have Jim, its not really dangerous as the cylinder would act as a safety valve anyway, even if the boiler did blow I'd have though the steam dome would shoot off first?

I have one the same as that, but I changed it for a proper safety valve.

I shall do the same
Les

You say that they have been repainted, were the bases red to start with or were they green???

They have only been repainted on the top, they are all red originally underneath, sort of rusted but original.
Lewis

those sel safety valves are a bit long
the one in my sel standard is a shorter one

love the sel minor mm mate that is an engine that is def on my list
erikl

a great trio you have there!
Quite a challenge getteing the parts and doing the soldering, but if there's anyone who can solder engines, it's you

Looking forward to see the progrss on these engines!
Steve_S

That's a great buy MM. I'm sure you can sort them out! Nice to have three red ones... the green bases seem to be more common.
Mamodman123

Cheers guys!

I think MF can help me with the steam domes
Mamodman123

So it begins   IF you're wondering what the fridge magnet is doing, then its holding the two nameplate nails/rivets so I don't loose them, took me a loooooong time to find the last two i dropped

Interesting that you mention that. I had two SEL's that had fake valves and though they were something that someone had tried to make as a replacement. Wish I had kept them so I could put up a pic
Atticman

What a great buy MM, the Standard looks like one of the very earliest, its nameplate looks more embossed than usual

Also i think the earliest flywheels were all red (though sounds like it may have been repainted   )
Les

The first picture show a fake safety valve against a proper one, and the second is the fake.

My SEL 1520 Junior had one of those glued up safety valves fitted, and because there is something rattling in the boiler, I had assumed that it was the bottom end of the safety valve. However I've since read elsewhere on the web that these engines were provided with this false safety valve, with the theory that the cylinder will push off from the cylinder plate when there is too much pressure, and release this pressure. If you heat that false valve up you will find it is actually the top part of the safety valve neatly soldered into the body. With a tap (I think 8BA), you can then clean up the threads in the top part of the safety valve and build a functioning version. I'm just waiting for a tap to do exactly that to my false safety valve.

It also looks like the bottom piece of pipework from the lubricator to the cylinder on the 1540 Standard has been replaced at some point.

Good luck with getting some burners. I had to buy a scrap engine in order to get a 2 wick burner.

Les Marsh The two safety valves you show (one original and one from barry1946) are much longer than the valves fitted to my other SEL engines, and I notice they have an 'O' ring fitted between the top part and the body. Again mine do not have those fitted, and my springs are held on by 2 normal hex nuts, and not the circular shaped fitting your valves have fitted. Mooseman had advised me that the top part of the safety valve is actually the same as the piston, which again is true in my engines except for the 1550 Majors which have the slotted pistons.
Mamodman123

One down and three to go.

The little Minor is finished   . Nitromors ripped through the paint easily enough, so it was just a case of sand, paint and polish and she's done.

The Junior and Standard are still awaiting the parts......

Will have to wait for the parts to start the standard and junior, it's another out the way anyway

Les

That looks grand, well done.  Thumbs up!

Cheers Les!

I managed to snap off one of the boiler loop thingys while cleaning, I soldered it back on though

bessytractor

have you run her yet MM?
Minor1PJG

SUPERB work MM

Just lovely
Steve_S

That looks great MM!
flywheel61

Brilliant job on the Junior as usual.  Geez MM, and I thought James and Mooseman were the bargain getters.  Interesting about the false SV, they also had false whistles on some of the model 1500 twins and I have one.

My boxed 1550 twin came with instructions which said that a SV wasn't fitted,

but it has one,

I guiess the remainder will be done when Barry gets back on deck.

Cheers

Chris
Mamodman123

A non safety valve it is

False whistle though?

Yes,

I think it was lesmarsh who said that, and a couple of others also said they had them.  It seems a lot of work to go to not to have a functiong whistle.  To be honest, I've found most toy steam whistles to be prestty ineffectual anyway.

Cheers

Chris
Wallace

Nice work on the engine MM
Stitch

Nice work, MM     I love to see an SEL nicely restored and you have done a great job. Good luck with the next two.
mogogear

Those little SEL's are sure nice and compact!!- and your work made it look band box new!!
Lewis

Mamodman123

Cheers guys!

This was the "easy" one
Sandman
