Probably won't fire this one again for a long while. I'll strip her down & clean up with an oily rag. I want to keep the painted gold effect on the boiler etc, so no stripping/polishing with brasso.

That's why I bought Nitromors, to remove the paint on my SEL. If it's in good condition then it's great! if it's burnt and missing then it's horrible

The paint effect on the firebox is also a strange one... I couldn't find anything to replicate it, so I just used heat proof black!

The firebox was probably baked after being painted to achieve the vinyl effect.

Cracking little engine!

here's a trick - the SELs are so light running that they will run off the exhaust pressure from a larger engine. Bit of silicone tubing over the exhaust pipe, secure it in the SEL saferty valve bush with some PTFE tape, steam up the bigger engine and off it goes! There's a bit of video at

Most of the noise you hear is coming from the little SEL, not the Jensen powering it - the Jensen hardly notices.

MJ...that SEL twin is a sweet little runner, really nice to see it slowed down and same with the SE3.

Thanks Rog, i prefer to see engines just ticking over. The SEL's burner is ideal for slow running as it appears under sized for the engine. Any engine has to be well machined & balanced to run slowly, which is a credit to the manufacturer.

A nice little runner!

Luckily i got mine quite cheap
The SEL's on ebay over the last couple of weeks seem to have shot up in price quite dramatically. I've been looking for a boxed 1540, but they've all been a bit pricey.
