Setting a new safety valve

Hi everyone,

A new safety valve should be arriving tomorrow for the M140 that I'm restoring.  It will be un-set.  What I'd like to know is how to set the valve correctly (ie, changing the nut on the spindle to set the spring) so that it works ok.

I don't think I can use the valve on the Seahawk boiler as a guide as the boiler on the 140 is about 2/3 the length of the Seahawk boiler.

Are there any hard and fast rules for this type of thing?

Thanks

Pete

I've never tried this myself but Tubal Cain recommends getting the kitchen scales place the bottom of the shaft with the spring on it and holding the knurled bit press down.
If the SV opens between 2 and 3 ounces it will be roughly set for 10psi so I would do adjust it so it opens at around 3 1/2 ounces and that should set it somewhere between 10 and 15psi.

Hi Pete,

I use a highly technical process - I tighten it until it feels right! Have a feel of the pressure required to open the Seahawk valve, and just approximate that on your 140 valve. How far you have to screw in the nut very much relies on the quality of the spring.

Yup, same here Moose!

Probably why my Bowmam 135 keeps blowing up

The springs I use are rated in pounds / inch. I cut to an appropriate length, finger tighten them - then use the kitchen scales for final setting!

Thanks Odilon.  I'll give that a go.  It's a brand spanking new spring so  it should be fine.

If you hear a bang ... then it's probably me.

Cheers

You may wish to stand back unless you want water all over it
