Share your Sightglass changing tipsI know that I can not be the only one who had trouble changing out a sightglass on a Loco. I am sure that many have things that they do to insure a good seal. Share the knowledge. The next guy will not be climbing the walls fighting with this maybe.
What I plan on doing next is to put a layer of thin teflon between the glass and the metal surround, gauge, shroud, whatever you call it as I wonder if maybe the gasket needs to compress some.

I can't give any great tips John except state the obvious things which I'm sure you already did.
Make sure boiler surface is clean.
Check that the surface is flat to provide full contact with the gasket.
Make sure the gasket is clean.
Make sure the glass is flat.
I'm sure you will of already done this but its worth mentioning for other people.

I made my own gasket out of 2mm O ring material. Before I fitted it I put a thin smear of steam oil on it.

I just throw the loco away and get another one!!
Just kidding, I had trouble with one, that silly little O ring just wouldn't stay in place. I made one from a piece of car inner tube rubber. Hasn't leaked yet.
