That looks like an early TE (bolted not riveted) that will clean up a real treat!!
Cmon what are you waiting for you lucky bugger!!!

Clean it and run it.

Hi dooly and welcome to the forum.
That's a nice early version of TE1 you have, rarer than the later versions but not extremely rare. Clean it up first and see what it looks like before deciding. You might need to repaint the rusted parts in order to protect them.

Not really rare but a very good find. Clean it, oil it, steam it and let's see it when you've done it

That looks a lot better already. If it was mine, I'd repaint the canopy and possibly the back end of the firebox. The rest looks not too bad.

Nice engine. That did clean up nice.
If it were mine I'd get onto treating the canopy rust and painting it. But obviously it's up to you.
You could certainly paint the whole lot, but paint loss on the boiler and smokebox won't lead to corrosion
Good find and welcome to the forum

it is slightly arched ? is that important ?
guess the concensus is that i can do no harm to it if i restore it ..

No mate, It's just the later canopies were ribbed.

It should be arched, the 'flat roof' refers to the absence of the ribbed design of the roof on later (I believe) models.

Well that certainly has improved the way it looks.I would spray paint the canopy.Halfords "Rover White" is a close match to the original colour.

well its in parts

strange thing happened when i put the stripper on ?
not sure if it was painted brown before or something else is going on

An excellent early example that's worth preserving. The keen collectors would pay double for one of those over the later ones. Sometimes more.
The brown stuff looks like classic tin-worm. Mamod used a cheap powder coat paint most of the time and it looks like it has penetrated deep under the paint.
I suggest a very good scrub with wire brush and wool, or alternatively electrolysis, followed by a good chemical treatment prior to painting with a rust inhibiting primer and top coat.
The TE1 is well regarded on the forum due to the great speed they can achieve.

Great information and thanks .. i have worked out a treatment for it and it seems to be working

Here it is halfway through the treatment for the "tin worm" .. saves loads of time unlike using sand paper etc. and no scratches to polish out

Excellent find a nut and bolt flat canopy TE1 dating from 1963. It would of originaly had the transfers "MAMOD STEAM TRACTOR" across both sides of the canopy between the screws.

i have noticed the crank has been changed to a later thick on and the flywheel has drill but not fully through as the end is still thin and also the the crank supports have been drilled out to fit the thick crank

Rare flat canopy model.
You can get the transfers from steam4fun if I remember correctly

Thats weird just noticed that the crankshaft is different than the early brass painted crankshafts used on the early TE's from 1963/1964. Looks like the plain crankshaft used on the 1965 and on version. Also the shaft is thicker unlike the thinner early crankshafts with "MAMOD" embosed on them, never seen that before is this another variation of the 1963 TE or is it a motification someone decided to do? Anyone else noticed this?
Here is a example of what im talking about (notice the crankshaft) on the 1963 TE1 with "MAMOD" embosed on it and thinner shaft:

Most likely a phosphoric acid treatment process.

interesting .. the crank suports do not seem like they were drilled out after manufacture .. i wonder if they used parts they had left when producing the thicker later ones ?
|
dooly

the fire box is the next part which was in bad condition so time to sort it out
good job as well as the tin worm had gotten the this as well

stripped the chimney as the paint was flaking off and when i got it off i thought lets sort the casting lines out .. what do you think

I wouldn't bother, there is not a trace of any original decals on the canopy, so its difficult to say for sure it ever had any. Such minor variation is possible.
The fat crank shaft is probably a replacement. The thin ones wear appreciably and wear the frame, and are also easily bent, so the easiest fix is to fit a "modern" one.
The chimney looks great for having its flash line removed, well done. I have "improved" some, but clearly the full strip and spin round works very well.
I look forward to the finished result

Welcome.
You don't normally see them in such good original condition and with all the bits, you even have the box and the instructions. It is quite a find.
Its in good shape for 50 years. The best thing is it is not pristine so you can happily run it which is what it was made for.
Just make sure you make a video so we can all enjoy it.

Hi all .. had major problems with the painting of the canopy .. never mind the rain but had to strip it twice due to dog hair and once where our lass managed to hit it with the hover while the paint was curing
well done what i am gong to do with it .. but i will start a new post with before and after shots
cheers all for the input and to all who have offered to give it a new home
