It can look swell.......

Look how Rog mounted (his then) SE3 that I now own.....

Only thing I added is the genny and gauge.

I have an SE3 mounted on the original metal base. I have dismantled this engine a couple of times lately for re-soldering pipe work.

Both times I removed the green piston / flywheel mounting brackets I noticed that oil and water that had dripped from the piston bore during running had collected between this bracket and the base where you could not get at to clean without dismantling.

I think mounted on a wood base looks very good but I would consider this point in the planning stage as wood not adequately protected could discolour or rot over a period on an engine that is run on a regular bases.

I think it's a great idea a lot of people mount newer Jensens on wood bases but I've never seen a Wilesco on a wood base
Les

How would you fix the firebox to the base as it has tags you twist to hold it down doesn't it??

Jim, that SE3 still looks great, even better with your mods...it runs like 2 cylinder sewing machine now!!!

I have almost every engine I own mounted on wood...most came that way, but some I have made wood bases for (like Jim's SE3 above).  The trick is to apply multiple coats of polyurethane finish to the wood before making any holes in it...then pre-drill the holes with a smaller drill bit to avoid splintering of the wood.

I run my engines a lot and get water and oil on the wood regularly. I just wipe it up and have had no problems to date.  Wood bases give the added advantage of more weight so the engine doesn't tend to dance all over the surface it's sitting on.  Still, I have a few wood based engines I must apply rubber shelf sheeting to so that "grip" the table better.

Not sure how a Wilesco would attach to wood...you might have to get creative.  On that SE3, I made long U hoops of brass rod which go over the boiler, inside the firebox and project out the bottom of the wood...nuts are sunk in the wood surface from underneath so when tightened down nothing sticks out below the wood's base.

Go ahead...experiment!!!

Personally, I love the look of a steam engine mounted on wood.  It gives the industrial feel of a steam engine a bit of warmth.

Believe me, I'm thinking of mounting my Jensen 65 on a nice piece of wood.   With an engine that's not a coveted collector's piece, why not make it your own????

I say give it a try.  If you don't like it, you can always go back to the way it is now.

If you did put it on a wooden base. You could leave extra room on the woddern base so you could add dynamos and things.

Burnmafingers

I think engines on a nice wooden base look nice
newsteamer123

i need to cut out the wood and tips on how to solder...... under the wood.
Keith S

Make some kind of heat shield out of tin or something, to slip between the object to be soldered and the wood.
ozsteamdemon

I wood add that a wooden base changes the sound an engine makes from tinny to woody ............ much nicer !
