I think the Chinese invented it about a thousand years ago?   But here again you take the commonplace material that everyone has, and make a clean, clear demonstration of principle. The rocket is the simplest of all engines after all, So much for "it's not rocket science!"  (it is!) So it is a vivid demonstration of the potentials of under-appreciated things.
