Slowest engine!Righty ho guys and gals
I just thought. Let's do a competition.
Each member can enter ONE engine into the slowest running engine catagory. We find the slowest engine from each country, and we do a "slowest engine run off" for like slowest engine in Europe, and in the world etc etc.
Rules are as follows
1) The engine must be a TOY engine
2) The engine must be working under steam pressure from it's own boiler and burner.
3) The engine must be able to run on it's own at a slow speed, without the constant moving of the regulator.
Happy steaming!!
James
My entry is coming up.
steamyjim
Im deciding what to enter.
It cant be a stuart can it
James
Nope. Only like Mamod, Wilesco and the small end Jensen type thing. And any other makes that have the same simplicity.
HERE IS MY ENTRY
Dampfzauberer
I will enter my Schoenner lokomobile
....Germany: 12 Points

HOLLY CRAP THATS SLOW

What about toys that are compliacted or built to a high standard like Basset Lowke?
Like a D32? (not that i have one
James
Not a D32... that's basically a model!
Anyone care to challenge my D22?
Mamodman123
It's slow very slow but not very "smooth"
James
Oh well
It's SLOWEST not SMOOTHEST
I bet it could get one of the smoothest too
rangerssteamtoys
To me thats not what I would call "Running", I would call running wher the engine maintains a constant speed unlike your D-22 which was more of a speed up,slow down, speed up,slow down, speed up,slow down,
To me it need to be more of a chug chug chug chug chug chug with the exception of a moderat slowdown for our slide valve engines but not that much.
Not trying to get you " disqualified " or anything but it needs to be steady.
James
Aye it is steady like. And it is moving the pistons under it's own steam!
Mamodman123
Maybe more of a constant speed?
James
You can all be quite welcome to do the same as I did....
steamyjim

A D32 is a toy.
JUST A GURT BIG UN

James

SillyBilly
I agree with Ranger, it should have to have a constant speed
James
Ok, but you can do the same if you can get your engine to do it!
It is still keeping going under it's own steam and it is still turning!!! It ain't stopped therefore it is a RUNNING engine!
Mamodman123
Not easy to maintain a constant slow speed I must admit
rangerssteamtoys

Yes I know that thats why I started up this discussion, so maybe he would give in and lighten up there for you mamod fans can have a fighting chance. I got some tweeking to do on my engine when I get home.
But now the secrets out
Lewis

my sp6 is pretty slow
not as slow as james' d22 though

I'm going to struggle to get it under 60 rpm
Out of my league, I wonder if an SE3 would go slower with an exhaust throttle instead of a steam throttle

I may have a few tricks up my sleeve,

Errrr there are rules in this contest

But it was built in Germany, just 'cos it's in the UK doesn't mean that that is what makes it slow. All other Wilescos of this model can travel at the same speed, so if their outside of the UK, how do you choose the winner?
James
It's the person who can get their engine to run the slowest!
Wallace
I'll get one up around Saturday
I'll be far off winning I think. James's is a goodun
Been too windy to fire engines here
James
Which engine you gonna fire Wallace? The SE3?
Wallace
Was going to, for a slow engine, but if MM can't get a SE3 going slower, there is no way I can
So was thinking of the 48SE2
It might go slow
James
Aye! The flatbases nearly always go dead slow. My 1949 SE2 does. Ticks over nicely!

With a heavier flywheel it probably would, or is that cheating?
James
Ooooh yeah
The engine can't have upgrades or mods or anything.
Things like burners don't count though. You can use whatever gives you a slower run. Solid fuel, meths, gas etc

may i ask, does the Hornby Rocket count? I would class it as a toy, seeing as it only runs on about 10 psi. I have a film of it very slowly turning over which I could enter.
and may I say SillyBilly, how much I enjoyed the spiderpig banner? When I saw that trailer, i couldn't help but sing that line occassionally! Look out, he is a spider pig!!!
cheers

That could be the slowest loco
Then we need slowest mobile
and slowest stationary

Slowest D409H'llo, lasses and lads!
Found this on youtube. A nice wee boy manhandling a Wilesco D409 - shows how sturdy the little tractor is. It does kinda break my heart, though, that the roof has been removed. Watch the little movie! You'll love this kid and his steam tractor ...
Cheers, says Tom

Buy a traction engine if you don't want a canopy

hot water dosent really burn as much as a hot metal part though
steamyjim
No but there was a lot of this
Id say there was enough from the hole run to fill the boiler again
And it only went up the track once or twice.
Got some vids of these unssucesful (but first) runs of the SL1 probally dont want to see them though
rangerssteamtoys
Depends on how hot the water is, I also burned my arm with boiling hot grease when I was about 6 or 7. It HURT!!!!!!!!!!!! it left a little scar wich I can still se today. My most current burn ouucred when I was running my mamod steam tractor, a flame came out of the firebox and heated up the whistle loop. Then I came over and grabbed the heck out of it and burned my finger which left a little circle.
steamyjim
Now you see why people wanted mamod engines banned in the late 70s
Thank god they werent... where would we be today- its unthinkable
Lewis
get lost those who wanted to ban steam toys
i think with steam they should expect the user is going to be burned occasionally
rangerssteamtoys
We would all have wilescos, and this fourm would be Unofficial wilesco and Other Steam Forum, simply because wilescos have plastic whistle handles.
Lewis

some mamods have plastic handles
a few sore fingetips never hurt anyone eh

He described it as a G+G on ebay and I bought it at the last minute cause it was cheap without looking.
Cost me next to nothing though.
Was just a worn out SE3.
