some device to put around meths burners...............to protect the paint on baseplates.

I have two meths fired engines with wood bases Clinton, and protect the finish using a thin sheet of copper on one, thin sheet of brass on the other. I bought K&S sheet copper and brass at a hobby shop and trimmed to size. It works nicely.

Does the bottom of the burner get hot, never noticed that they do. Bowmans E101, E158 E135 (?) run with the burners directly on the wood.
As long as meths dont spill I think it will be OK without protection.

Yes, the burner of my E135 sits on the wood and I haven't had a problem so far. I have thought of gluing thin cork sheet to the bottom of my Bowman and Latimer burners to protect the base plate paint from scratches, and as cork is a reasonably good insulator it would protect from heat too. I haven't tried this yet though.

I think cork might be more flammable than the wood base, I could be wrong, but best to err on the side of caution. A piece of metal would be the best bet, if needed at all. It would not have to be glued down, just a removable shield ( which I think would be unneeded )
