Sorry Fleischmann resurection

This engine was brought along with some others
it was listed as suitable for parts ?
now when it arrived unfortunately the boiler had taken a hit and was dented

it came with the SV but no other  fittings
Removed both end caps  and the internal washer/bushes .
removed dents  and refitted end caps
and just now realized that the sight glass should be on an angle       obviously an idiot was loose in the shed
The sight glass end cap has a 2 mm brass plate behind it to provide threads for the sight glass and drain cock . and new externally fitted bushes for the rest of the boiler
a tap has been removed form another spare part boilers
to provide a regulator for the steam and found a small tap for the drain cock .

Fire box has been painted and baked
scorpion2nz

Right now on the problem number 2
the crankshaft bearings are

ok so on to plan number 1

I am sure the bearings are in there somewhere
getting closer to finding them

aahhhaaa there they are

getting closer  thanks to hacksaw and files

still a long way to go
whistleman

Dennis, going well so far.  I'm watching this.
MODmanMax

It looks very ambitious to machine new ones.  Watching with interest.

machining would be easy but I do not have a mill so
hacksaw and file it is
scalex

Wow that boiler is so shiny i thought you had got it nickle plated Dennis in the first photo.

quite simple really
I have an old electric drill that is on a stand and attached is a cloth buffing wheel  just need to watch out for bits that may catch .
nothing worse than a nicely polished piece that takes a nose dive to the concrete floor

Very nice work Dennis, you're doing a great job so far.
Celsius 100

A spectacular result regarding the boiler.
IndianaRog

Some fine handiwork coming together there Dennis...it will be a stunner for sure when you finish her up.
Les

You are doing a grand job Dennis, I am looking forward to seeing it running.
benchmark

Dennis , your ability to restore even the most discouraging of projects is unmatched. I am keeping an eye on this one.
mrborinator

Amazingly, there you can certainly be proud of...

Rob.
MrMamod

Dennis the man who can make something out of nothing - It is amazing the things that get repaired in that MAGIC barn/workshop of yours     ..
Wallace

Great job
scorpion2nz

more filing has been done
I have given up on doing the recess and pattern
but drill holes in the top and made 4 very small bolts to screw in  and cut the groove to simulate a bearing as per the original .
also drilled a oil hole that will have a small oil cup made eventually
Possibly painting tomorrow

do I leave them as they are or do I attempt the recess
BK

Mate, I'd give up while i'm in front, looks good.

Excellent work. Congrats Thumbs up!
Les

I would leave them as is.
scorpion2nz

Painted the bearings today and that was a challenge
Temperatures got to a high of 6 degrees Celsius
so pre warm bearings in a small bench top oven I have in the shed for painting purposes painted, then dried in oven and repeated again
then fitted to engine.

Fitted a couple of boiler fittings

not photoed  but a Glass tube has been bent to shape and it worked on the first attempt
still need to make sight glass retaining plates
Les

They look good and do not look out of place, you would take them to be original.
scorpion2nz

Turned the tap on top of boiler off  and removed the oiler cap and attached air line
slow running on 2 psi and fast running on 5 psi

slight hiccup as runs one way faster than the other way

Les

But at least it does run, you must be real happy with that.
xlchainsaw

that seems to be running well....just need to run the bearings in a bit.
MrDuck

A very nice resurrection and no doubt your stands will outlast the originals
Celsius 100

You have transformed it into a very good runner.
scorpion2nz

Well I steam it up today with a Mamod Vap burner
(I do have the proper burner and chimney)
sigh glass is not finished yet and the screws are temporary.
Wilesco weight and still need to sort out a whistle and gauge ??

Not to bad for an engine that was sold as suitable for parts

and while the video was uploading to youtube (about 1.5 hours
I did some hard labor in the shed

hacksaw and filed out of a solid piece of aluminum

sarfraz

Excellent work Dennis.
You've done remarkably well.
scalex

that look good Dennis....Thats nice silver nail pollish you have on there
Earlytimes

Very nice work !
Sandman

Coming on a treat Dennis.
scorpion2nz

right I have attached the sight glass cover and turned 2 handles for the drain tap and regulator
I tried it on steam and I am happy with the results (no leaks)
Camera seems to highlight imperfections very well

I now need to acquire SV weight  size and weight so I can replicate 1 and on the look out for a suitably looking whistle (maybe Wilesco) I will adapt.
Les

That looks good Dennis.
MrMamod

Looking great Dennis and i love the wood turned handles.
sarfraz

Top work Dennis, looking great.
scorpion2nz

contracted some work out last night to the Elves (due to the size if pieces )
2 little oil cups to fit on bearings  . Tight press fit with 1 mm holes for slow release of oil with bigger hole in top for oil reservoir .

Well that is about it for now as need to acquire  SV weight size and weight (in grams) and decide what to do about Whistle and gauge

and so here upon will end this tale . (For now) unless further parts become available .
It has progressed from the workshop and inside in to the  Cabinet
along with the other Fleischmann collection (total 5 engines ,8 accs ,2 line shafts) But 1 aggregate engine had to be evicted (  Other half nobbled it )

I have to admit   that I have actually enjoyed this project more than some of the others
Sandman

What a fine job Dennis.

You achieve with a humble file and hacksaw what some machinists would find a challenge.

Well done.
MrDuck

Sandy is quite right
Les

Without the right tooling at your disposal you have achieved miracles with this restoration.
Wallace

Great job
IndianaRog

Nice job of it Dennis...hacksaw and file are professional implements in the hands of an expert!

Second that, fine work Dennis.
igy569

I am really impressed!!!
Burnmafingers

Outstanding effort with the hand tools
sarfraz

This is a fantastic thread. An engine in quite a sad state, it show's what can be achieved. Don't worry about what might happen, just get stuck into it.
MrMamod

Cheers Dennis i have enjoyed this thread as it just shows what CAN be achieved with only the basic hand tools   ..
Celsius 100

A splendid end result.Well worth the time and trouble.
Skippy Blue

Pure magic!
Meccanoid

This is now a beautiful engine with a very nice colour scheme.
steamernick

Wow!! That is certainly a labor of love. Awesome work!
metalhead100

Give this man a Lathe and a mill........!  Nice work!
kevin68

Sorry Fleischmann Rescurection

Hi Dennis i dont have a mill, i use hacksaw and some delicate filing and it always works well for me.   Anyway carry on the good work, cant wait to see the finished article.

Dr. Rog

If no-one gets there first I will weigh the safety-valve weight off my engine for you. Its surprisingly small, about 2 M6 nuts.
steamernick

You did a fantastic job !

10.6 grammes. A good deal smaller than the one you show in your picture.

I have the same engine only a few years newer. I tested the safety valve and it blows about 1 bar, which is what it should be.
