SP2

got this sp2 from mm for 22 quid and i hope to get it back to how it used to be as you can see it is a very rough example

tmuir

All doable but I think thats more than one nights work.

Making up the steam pipe and soldering it onto the engine frame can be a trying job but atleast its only 1 not 3 like on the Te1a s
Lewis

i have a pipe tmuir it needs soldering on
SPOKESMAN

Good luck.
Mamodman123

Well Lewis, you wanted a challenge
Lewis

it will be a beast when done
SPOKESMAN

I admire your deidication Lew!
Lewis

Lewis

so would you say the base needs repainting or a good t cut becauase its all there the paint just very sicky and muckky
Mamodman123

Try T-cut first Lewis, if that fails repaint
SPOKESMAN

In my view the engine is too far gone, in my opinion. The base if the paint is sounf but dirty should T-cut up OK.
Lewis

mike no engine is too far gone EVER

ok the base will need a repaint because under the dirt the colour has gone its now bright orange.

Mmm, Ill beg to differ there!
James

What if somebody buggered off with the engine, leaving only the firebox, say. Would that engine be too far gone?
Lewis

nope because you can get hold of the parts needed
James

If it was a MM2 twin and only original parts was allowed
Lewis

then id either make new parts for it or keep it as it is
James

Keep a fire box as it is?
Lewis

yep
Mamodman123

That engine isn't too far gone as the boiler is sound!
Lewis

when im done the whole thing will be great the only bad things o it are the crome sides and they arent that bad just trust me guys it will be a great engine when done
Mamodman123

Look forward to the finsihed result Lewis
Lewis

James

I'll sum this engine up.

Mechanically tis sound
Cosmetically it has loads of jip

Yup I suppose that's right. Thankfully it's a simple engine, couple of small easy solder jobs and it's back in business
SPOKESMAN

Wallace

Good luck with it Lewis. It'll be great to do and learn from it.

Should come up just nicely

Do you find the primer makes a lot of difference?
James

I don't. I done some with and some without. I can't find much difference.

I don't find it does on well prepared metal.

I always use it though, sort of the right steps. I'd use it on a base to fill out slight imperfections
Lewis

dunno i always use primer to make sure i get the best finish
MTA

On the big stuff you ALWAYS use primer, it also helps when you decide on whether it needs a repaint or not, if you can see the primer, repaint! The primer also acts as a barrier of sorts, so the top coat doesn't affect the material...

So in other words, use it

Yes, it's for the best, just follow the instructions on the can. Can't go far wrong then
James

You only use it because you are upper class MTA!
Sandman

Pretty obvious really.
James

MTA! I see you changed your signature
Sandman

Back to topic again re primer.

A little tip.

If you're restoring a rather badly corroded base and you just can't remove all the pitting by sanding, try a couple of thick coats of primer filler before ordinary primer.

You'll get a finish like a babies bum.
SPOKESMAN

Soft as well as smooth?

Lewis if you are interested in getting the stickers for the base you can buy them from Chas! good luck mate
Lewis

dont think im going to put the stickers back on

i have saved them both though
Wallace

Coming up real nicel Lewis
Lewis

cheers wal

hope that will be it for the painting
next clean up the boiler its a right dirty thing

the only major prob i say there would be is the crome sides and the soldering but that soldering shouldent be too hard to do

Its all good practice Lewis! As people know bodged soldering can look unsightly!
yosa

I have a man in Nuneaton who takes care of that sort of thing.

Mamodman123

Looking great Lewis!

SPOKESMAN

Looking good lew, the firebox sides need the most work?

Mamodman123

lewisop1991 wrote:

You can pick them up off ebay from time to time Lewis
Graham-Jilly

looking good lewis
Wallace

Very nice work Lewis
Lewis

may have a crack at soldering the peipe today
need to go and buy some solder
Lewis

got some solder
it is a thick plumbing solder and is lead free
Roly Williams

Lewis wrote:

You'll need flux as well - special flux for lead free solder.
Lewis

aye i have some normal flux
ill give it ago later and then when i pressure test it we will see whats its like

by the way its not silver solder and it is a 99c grade
Lewis

it is made from this apparently

99.5 per cent tin, 0.5 per cent copper
Roly Williams

Lewis wrote:

Ordinary flux might work - give it a try. When I bought some Lead free solder from B&Q, on the same shelf there was the same brand flux labeled "flux for lead free solder" so I just assumed it was special flux. It might not be, of course.
oldstuff

Great pics, Lewis. I admire your tenacity. Is Oatey brand solder and flux available
over there? I use their silver plumber's solder and either their #5 lead-free
soldering paste or #95 lead-free tinning flux. Takes a bit more heat, this silver
solder but it's incredibly strong.
Lewis

the crome sides are now done pic uploading before and after
Lewis

2 hours polishing later those horrible rusted crome sides are back to normal i havent recromed them i just polished them

SPOKESMAN

Better Lew, though some the real bad corrosion is practically impossible to remove.
Lewis

aye the fronts are best the backs are ok now but still bad corrosion in some places
Mamodman123

Sides are looking a lot lot better LEwis Don't forget I remember what they were like before

Really you should use LEAD based solder! You can get it here as my old man uses it for plumbling!
Lewis

god in hell i have just solderd the pipe the top bit to the engine frame went well

the boiler the solder is so strong the blowtourch wondent shift it i had to poke it in with a screw driver

its looks ok and is incredibly solid should be fine

although i hope it gets mms aproveval
Lewis

Its finished
pics a little later guys
