SR1 restoration

Hi I've just started to restore my 1st ever Mamod a SR1 it came well worn but cleaned up nicely I have replaced the axles with some from Simon at steam 4 fun plus new forks and I'm awaiting an engine cowl, the boiler isn't to bad at all but the chimmney and smoke box do need a repaint should I use high temp paint I do want to steam her if i do paint the boiler should I use high temp paint I did enquire with Simon and he has intimated that the mamod paint he supplies is either enamel or celulose suggestions welcome as I'm new to real steam its abit different to OO gauge! thanks Si

Hi and welcome to the forums

You won't need a high temp paint for the chimney/smokebox end, but if you already have some HT paint in black, it won't hurt to use it.
Enamel will do.

I don't know anything about cellulose paint. I only use enamel.

When painting the boiler, I always use an etch primer first and I don't paint the part of the boiler which goes into the firebox.
Just make sure you follow the directions on the etch primer can as they can vary slightly with regards to how soon the final coats go on. Some are as short as 1hr after applying the etch primer.

For some final help regarding it withstanding heat, after it's painted and cured (leave it a week) I carefully fire the engine.

Fill the boiler with cold water, put the burner in and keep an eye on the paint as the boiler heats up. If at anytime the paint starts to get any blisters or faults, I pull the burner out, let the whole lot completely cool, top up the water and do it again. Doing this 2 or 3 times cures the paint, and from then I haven't had a problem.
Even if the paint doesn't fault on that first firing, pull the burner out and let it cool once the engine is at full steam, ie ready to run.

Hope that helps and good luck with it.

Thanks for the welcome (every one ) and thanks for the advivce as regards curing, I see some ther posts metion curing in the oven. I 'm waiting for some parts tocome and as  aquired a TE1a last week I've also started cleaning and polisihing her up.I gather from loking at it alot of parts are interchangeable. When fired her up, I thought the piston assembly was out of true it ran wobbly and wouldn't run under load so Ive just fitted a new high power piston and although not fired up does feel a lot bettr and runs more freely when spinning by hand.Think I will now buy shares in BRASSO.Thanks Si

Resurrecting an old favorite toy is very rewarding. I had good luck with the kind of paint that cures in the oven, although it's best done when the Lady of the manor is out for the day. We might enjoy the smell of baking paint but some people do not.
Wallace

Just one thing to add re the oven curing you have read about. That is fine for things like fireboxes, just not boilers. It's possible that some ovens will melt the solder on a boiler.

I was very pleasantly surprised the good lady has quite taken to mamods she even cleaned the whistle which was literally black and insists on doing some polishing, wait till I take her down the road to see the W.H.R she'll need a big tub of Braso me thinks. hope to post some pics soon

Have a look at this screen dump:

Make sure yours is as it is in the picture, 640 x 480 - recommended for forum posting.
Then your photos will be the right size.

Well I've been busy I did my 1st stripdown

and put everything in "nitromorse" then cleaned sanded and wirebrushed the firebox. I used Halfords Ht black, didnt like it so sanded and repainted with barbque black.I like the finish much better, then did the smokebox, primed and then sprayed with satin black enamel" Oh! s*** promptly dropped it so start again.I painted  the boiler with galvanising primer my next mistake I used a cheap brush BAD PRACTICE! I then re-did it using a sable brush WHAT a difference.I then gave it 2 coats of red matt enamel undercoat

I have just sprayed it applegreen and am not temptig fate when dry I will post some more pics.
This is a very fast and steep learning curev but I am enjoying it so much that I now have 2 TE1a's and a SR1a to start Oh! and I couldn't reist a new toy hopefully will arrive tomorrow wait and see

That does look good! You can't go wrong with black and red.

Might I also respectfully add that it's best NOT done by putting your painted parts on the Lady of the Manor's favourite cookie trays, lest they leave bright red rings of paint (and beautifully hardened, scratch resistant rings at that) on said sheets.

Hello doghouse...
simon hudson

Yep! been there done that. I had a lovely red splodge in the middle of an old baking tray to find out it belonged to Joannes late mother. Oops I've done it again!!.
Well back to buisness I applied the final coat of apple green tonight so hopefully some pics tomorrow, and the new addition appeared today I'm well chuffed

Scared because it's new or because you haven't fire an engine before??
Kritika

Hi and   to the forum, I like the restoration
simon hudson

Scared to fire her up cos she's new and looks so lovely. Anyway back to the roller I made a right A*** of it I finished last coat of green and put it into a low heat oven to harden and left it to long "burnt the bloody green paint" so had to strip it right down again. just finished the undrcoat Ah! well I am a philosophical guy so hopefully another couple of days for some pics. As an aside if you wanted to make the paint work look old do as I did but keep an eye as it turns quickly it did look to have a nice patina about it
Les

You want to be careful if you are putting the boiler in the oven to harden the paint as you could melt the solder.
simon hudson

I put boiler in on very very low heat just above S setting that is slow cook Touch wood no probs so far!! .
On third re paint so far so good
