SR1A cleanup

Got a Mamod SR1A which was already in tidy nick but I thought I would see if I could make it look a bit better.

Unfortunately it had been sat in a damp box, which has corroded the wheels on the bottoms and made the paint lift in a few places.

As you can see, the rollers were in a pretty bad state, pretty badly pitted in places too   . But after an hour or so of effort, I got one looking alot better, with just some of the worst of the pitting evident, which to remove would mean removing of loads of the metal.

The top of the boiler is still green paint when I look through the holes in the boiler box and there is little, if any wear on the piston which leads me to believe that it has hardly seen any action or undergone a restoration previously. It steam very well indeed, probably the best of my collection.

wow  ive never seen wheels like that before and i thought mine were shiny
madeinenglang

rollers what did you use to get them looking like that
Wallace

Fantastic job on the rollers
straughany

wow! thats shiny! there is an easier less metal shearing way tho... they wont come out as shiny as them but it will do a prety good job... if you get some fairly rough sand paper... wire wool, brasso...
sand them down until you get rid of the detritus like the limescale... and then rub them hard with the wire wool when they look fairly clean polish them with brasso... works a treat   thats what i did and i dont regret it... ohh and put elastic bands around the wheels so it will protect them from scratches on concrete and they act as a tyre aswell

I got the SR finished yesterday so I thought I'd post up a couple of snaps. It now temporarily resides on my bookcase along with the TE1a, quite a nice pairing.

As feared, the wet has lifted off in a few places, and some of it fell off just by me breathing the wrong way near it! I removed the worst of the bits still a bit loose and thought about touching them in but with some paint but decided against it.

I used various grades of oxide paper and scotch pad with autosol on the wheels. I spent a bit too long poncing about with 1000/800 grit on the bad corosion and worked down coarser as I realised that my attempts at correcting the finish were non too bountiful given the time spent.
I think if I had to tackle the same wheels again, it be starting with a 180  grit paper.

Great Job. Those rollers look fantastic.
Can you coat the wheels with something to prevent oxidisation?
Les

  An excellent job, congratulations.

I wouldn't want to lacquer them to be honest as corrosion can still start underneath it and it would be a bugger to sort out. Plus the lacquer may start flaking.

After I'v polished them up, I go over the bare metal with some Belgom Alu, it seems to keep oxidation at bay for longer than other stuff I've used but if they do oxidise, its just nature taking its course and is fine by me. Besides, now that the wheels are pretty tidy, it wouldn't take long to give them a quick going over with some polish to make them shiney again.

Thanks for the comments

I guess you are right about the laquer flaking off. I feel like polishing my roller now. Once again, well done!
