steam calliope

this has been lizs "dream" for the past couple of years. tony gave us the plans about two years ago and we have been slowly working towards one.
http://www.john-tom.com/MyPlans/S...ModelEngineerSteamWhistle1952.pdf

my design is different but im guided by these plans. in the stwww section we did a woop woop whistle!! apart from being a woop woop whistle i made it so i could determine how long the whistle needed to be to play a note. using an electronic tuner ive been able to blow middle c to top e ! plus ! this range will cover simple tunes like twinkle twinkle little star.!

in the rough i was able to "play" 2 bars before running out of steam from my boiler. its now intended to build a full size boiler .
the biggest drawback to the project was the whistle valve!! so i designed my own! a bit from mamod.... a bit from the above plans. i tested it today. missing from the pic is the "key" because im going to cast these from aluminium to cut down on the weight as the valve is spring loaded. (same as a mamod)

i estimate this project will take approx 400 hrs of work . so i wont make this post progressive! i will be happy with being able to play "jingle bells" this time next year but something tells me we wont be waiting to long. the above plans call for 50 psi. ours will work on 20 psi!

wow, that is an ambitious project. If anyone can do it, it is you. Can not wait to see the progress.

LBSC was certainly an optomist, published this in October with a view to it being a Christmas present!
Another year he offered plans for a fire engine, he did actually produce one, it was on display at the Merstam steam fair about 10 years ago.
I have an idea there was also a steam hammer and crane as Christmas specials.
