Went to Ryhope steam engine open day 3 years ago on Aug bank hol, and there was an exhibition of steam engines there, only a few, the pumping engine is worth a look as well.

Near to Sunderland, so not far from you

Thanks I will but all the good stuff like STIA and all the good steam fairs are almost always as far away from me as possible while still remaining in this country

Thats it Les, great place, worth a trip in steam even if no toy engines are there- maybe worth emailing them re the toy steam and exhibiting yours as well Pauly

NO WAY I am terrible at exibiting and would probley forget to do the saety valve on 1 of the engines right and then have it fly off in a great jet of steam

its happened before besides my parents dont have time for me and my steamy obsessions and I would never be able to organise it myself

but I will ask

You wouldnt be the first to have steam pouring out when exhibiting, besides attracts more crowds then

I hope it all works out.

Are there any forum members near you that could help set it up and bring some engines?
Les Marsh

Good luck.
pauly

great now you two have jinxed me  besides it never works out even if they said yes on the day of the show the pumping station would probably get hit by an astroid

You could point out that STIA brings nearly 2000 visitors into Abbey Pumping Station.

That might whet their appetites.

Of course we have much better Beam Engines at APS but you'd probably better not mention that

Have you been to Ryhope Fred? From memory there are two beams  there but I think its a taller building? Therefore I assume the beam has a greater stroke at Ryhope? .

The Ryhope ones pumped water 200 0dd foot up to be drunk in Sunderland , but Abbey pumped, as you know, sewage
fcrammond

As you say Ryhope has two big beam engines. At APS we have FOUR!!!

Twice as good

So far as I know there are only three pumping stations with four identical beam engines worldwide, us, Crossness, and Bardolinhas in Lisbon. None of the Lisbon engines are steamable, one of the Crossness engines is steamed and three of our engines are steamed with the fourth now rotateable under hydraulic power whilst we work on freeing the valve gear.
Incidentally the high pressure piston valve cut-off spindle alone weighs well over an imperial ton.

I suspect most of the water pumped up at Ryhope ended up as sewage. Either before or after it was drunk

All three of the steamable APS engines will be in action over the weekend of June 28/9. We will also be filling the pool for steamboats and pond yachts. All visiting craft welcome.

Fred

Cheers
