Steam Toys in Action the Financial Facts of Life

Some financial considerations relating to Steam Toys in Action.

This year I have had one or two queries from exhibitors who have been concerned that by coming in via the exhibitors entrance in Corporation Road they are depriving us of their entry fees. This is not actually the fact.
First I need to define “us”. We are Leicester Museums Technology Association. A registered charity devoted to supporting the Abbey Pumping Station. The Abbey Pumping Station is a museum owned and operated by Leicester City Council.
Steam Toys in Action is an annual event organised by LMTA at APS.
For various historical and legal reasons all gate money (entrance fees) from the event are collected and retained by Leicester City Council. To be fair they do pay for the Dealers’s Marquee (about £1000 presently) and the wages of the staff deemed necessary for Elf’n’Safety reasons. All other expenses are met by LMTA from their various on site activities…. Refreshments, book sales, train rides, trade fees, collection boxes etc.
So “we” don’t get anything from the gate. So if you feel you would like to contribute financially to “us”your best course is to make a donation in a collection box. This is not as simple as it sounds. Many of the collection boxes you will see around the site are indeed ours. Others are not. Several of our exhibitors have collecting boxes for their own worthy causes, Heart disease research, Hedgehog resucitation, etc etc There is a large circular plastic box in the Gallery that collects funds for “The Friends of Leicester and Leicestershire Museums” a worthy organisation that purchases Art Objects for the above museums. Very commendable but not "Us" .
All monies raised in our boxes is spent for the benefit of Abbey Pumping Station. The choice is yours.

Its the Belt and Braces approach
MrMamod

Thankyou Fred for explaining things and will watch out on the day.

Fred,

When you hit me up for my other required cash I will ensure I give to cover both costs.

I shall likely be the Jedi-looking chap at the model railways section.

Thanks for clarifying that Fred, it's so easy to just take for granted all the hard work and expense that goes in to running a show like STIA.  I will look out for 'your' collecting box and do the decent thing when I find it!

Regards,

John.

That is very good info Fred.

I must say that I think allowing exhibitors to bring in and display to solicit for their own unrelated charities' donation boxes and jars is extremely generous. Over here if an event is held to benefit a specific charity such as the museum or club putting on the event, it would be considered in very poor taste to solicit for anything else while participating in said event and anyone doing so would be politely required to put it away and be considered rather disrespectful.

Your collecting boxes (for your museum organization) should be all that is there, IMHO.

You have to remember that we are holding the event on the premises of a local government financed and owned museum (public museum) and as such we have to adhere to their aims and values. As a nationally recognised charity we are also constrained in our approach.
Having said tthat I think our membership is solidly behind our present "tolerant of others" approach. We are a broad church memberwise and although I do not think we would permit the more extreme organisations to piggyback on our success I would like to think we would all support the activities of our present associated exhibitors.

I can appreciate where you are coming from and it seems the culture of those involved in our hobby is of an extremely good nature.
Good on all of you. You have built a wonderful event.
