Steam winch

Based on a logging winch, but no particular model, it will have 2 drums that can be engaged off a common drive shaft.
Not a lot of photos, but here's the start of the main drum, that's a 3 1/2" meccano cog.

I made 2 then had to work out the set up, so I started with a piece of 3ply then when I had the holes in the right spot, transfered them to the steel.

The lower drum only has a 2 1/2" gear.
The "sides" were clamped and drilled so the holes were the same.
That worked OK and the gears turn nicely.

I then made inserts for the axles and soldered them to the sides.

That's about it for the moment.
xlchainsaw

an interesting build bernie. is this a driven winch or a steam winch...ie a winch with pistons......tubal cain has plans in his book for the "herculus" crane.......we have a full size one at petrie and a small model one of the fullsized one........we can organise pics for you....its steamup this weekend.
46u

Looking forward to seeing more. I like steam donkeys.
BK

Hi Glenn, it's a steam winch, I'm powering it with two Jensens (with the reversing gear).
I've got most of the layout stored safely in the plan cabinet.      , so i'm OK with that thanks.
Stoker

I too love steam donkey type engines with winching capacity, as used extensively in mining and especially in logging.

I'll certainly be following this thread closely Bernie!!!
scorpion2nz

Come on Bernie bigger is better

Thanks for sharing Bernie

Dennis, the winch looks big along side the engines I hope will drive it.

I've used a nice piece of shaft outa a printer for the "common" drive shaft, used my 1/8" end mill and put a keyway in it.

This piece of 1/2" with the meccano pinion soldered to it will be the sliding "clutch" (if you like to call it that, I don't know   ), I'm waiting for a 1" pinion to solder to the other end for the secondary winch.
The screw is inside the keyway and lets it slide either way.
The U piece will float there, but will have a fork in the U to slide the gears sideways.
I've used these U's before, but I fixed them to the sleeve and you had to make the fork spot on or the friction would take its toll power wise, by leaving it float I think I'm in front.

Engines arrived a couple of days ago, what you see is what I got, I made the shaft.

I know I'm going to enjoy this.
MrMamod

Bernie does your brain ever go to sleep and these things you come up with blow my mind and YES i certainly enjoy reading your threads ..
Steam Models

Nothing like a Bernie Build.
MODmanMax

Jeez Bernie do you ever sleep?

Looking forward to another interesting thread.
Steam Models

I like the way in which you made your clutch Bernie.
trentbradbury

Awesome, Impressive I wonder if you could rig it to a scale and measure the force it will pull... A really neat piece of engineering
46u

From seeing his excellent crane I know this is going to be super nice!
mogogear

Engineering at it its best
flywheel61

Another great Bernie Build/t, now you need to make the complete sawmill, in the same scale to, to make the operation comolete,     .

Cheers

So am I.
Gary279

Awesome!  A real fine job on that!!
Dean W

I'm a-watchin', Bernie.  I always watch your projects!
BK

Thanks for the votes of confidence, I sometimes don't feel as confident in my ability as you blokes seem to be.

I was having trouble, when I screwed the sides to the base, all the shafts locked up, I overcame the problem by fitting 2 spacers in the frame.

Once I'd done that, everything turned as it should.

The long threaded shaft at the lower rear is the crank shaft and these are the cranks to screw on.

More later.
BK

Engines now mounted on their "bases"

One crank pin hole was too "wide" and the piston bottomed out, second time lucky.

The position of the engines take a bit of careful marking, as there is only 1/32" free play at each end of the stroke.

With the crank at TDC (max travel), I push the cylinder till it bottoms out, then scribe a line on the base plate. Turn the crank 180 degrees and pull the cylinder and mark again. Mid way between those two marks is where the cylinder has to be fixed.
MrMamod

Bernie will this ever stop you have done this yet again and what a fantastic build   ..
colin

Model engineering at its best !!
steaminon

Coming along great.

Can't wait to see the finished article and see the vid of it in action!

Thats a man on a real mission
BK

I need to weld this fork onto the shaft for my clutch lever.

Best way to hold it is the magnet square.

That's done, now a "pawl" for the main winch.

Another small job was to cut and extend the reverse lever.

That's about it for the moment.
Celsius 100

Another engineering masterpiece progressing very well.
mogogear

Love the fork holding solution!!
BK

mogogear wrote:

Yes Mo, the magnetic square is handy, especially with the on/off switch.

Not a lot to show tonight, been doing a bit of thinking, because only one winch can be engaged at any time and the "fast winch" is connected to the "main winch" when working you have to be able to apply a brake to stop the drum free spooling and tangling the rope on the drum. (I know what I'm talking about, hope you understand    )
A simple fix for the fast one was a block of timber.

It runs on a 5/8" X 3/8" hub/drum.

The main needs a bigger drum so it got this 1 1/4" one.

Now to work out what to use as a brake, timber again????

With your enginuity mate, I'm sure you'll come up with something, and probably not wood - it just doesn't seem part of the eqaution,

Cheers

Chris
BK

OK, I'm back.

Oops, that's not steam.

This is,   . Base and engine mounts.

Winch undercoated.

Bit of a mock up to see if the linkage works....it does.

sarfraz

That is looking great, a model engineering show piece in the making.

Coming along beautifully, Bernie! Cannot wait to see it finished! Say, that little Jupiter looks familiar...

Just testing to see if you were looking.
classixs

I am really looking forward to seeing those two Jensen cylinders working on steam

Will be so exciting to find out how much that winch will pull
BK

Didn't get much done today, had to go to the "big smoke", but i've done a mockup to make sure everything fits.

Yep, it does, not sure about the matt black on the winch drums though??
Still have to work on a brake for the big drum.
Les

That's looking good Bernie, if you didn't paint the drums matt black what colour would you paint them?
Stilldrillin

I'm pleased I got here, before you finished it Bernie!

Good luck with the build. I'm sure it's going to be another cracker.......
Keith S

The matte black drums will look fine when there is cable wrapped onto them, Bernie.

That winch would look really good with a vertical boiler, like a steam donkey.
BK

Umm. well it's been a couple of days of head scratching.
I did a bit of plumbing to hook the steam line in.

From there I proceded to "try" and time the engines on air, I couldn't copy from my #55 'cause I'd taken the crank off, wrong move BK!!
So I timed the right hand cylinder to my 75, and did the left one the same, nothing, just a lock up.    After several attempts I PM'd Rog, he sent me some pics of his 55 that were helpful in the end.
The left hand engine seemd "lazy", so I unhooked the con rod off it, when I tried to run the right engine the con rod on the left did not move
I then put the air into the left engine only    nothing   , so I put the air hose on the exhaust of said LH engine, the piston moved out, turned the crank, it moved back.
My new engine has a blockage in the steam chest between the intake hole and the slide valve
I took the LH engine off my 55 and fitted it and got this.

classixs

Fantastic !!! Thumbs up!

Absolutely amazing work there, i am so looking forward to see what it pulls

Thanks for sharing
IndianaRog

Bernie, you are a smart feller!!!  That is fantastic, glad you got it going mate.
loose nut 45

Thats what I call engineering Smart job, well done
mogogear

Human outsmarts metal pieces again!!

Huzzah!!
belugawhaleman

Nice work that.

Bernie, you make the most entertaining machines on the forum!  I like this thing, a lot!
46u

This is really nice but it would take a lot to top your crane. Nice job on both.
BK

Put a bit of rope on the main drum today, yar, couldn't help myself, I had to try it (on air)

I think it will do the job just fine, now to fit a brake on the main drum, a clutch handle, and probably a ratchet on the small drum also.
Stilldrillin

Nowt wrong with that, Bernie!

Well done, and well demonstrated......
MrDuck

Close to needing a bit more gearing down but impressive results
Les

There's nowt wrong with that, well done Bernie.
46u

Very very nice!

Works great Mate, now what I think I need is a Steam Wench

Yum Yum
m8dave

that move that log well
Lenny

Great work Bernie .  Works really well .
Sandman

Great job Bernie.

Works a treat mate.
BK

Finally worked out a brake system for the main winch, here are the "bits"

Main ingredients, a piece of 1/2" hollow section and a zip tie.  a bit of cutting done on the hollow section. (The zip tie fits in the slot and the "big end" of it acts as an anchor)

Welded a foot on it then realized I couldn't drill the base without taking the winch off   ,(the keyless chuck is too big)   , but old "never throw anything out" remembered he had a small chuck from a long deceased drill.

That done it was just a matter of working out where to put the hole in the zip tie.

The tie acts as a spring to hold the handle back, you have to push to apply the brake.

I'm pleased with the result.
boody227

Vey Nice, on our mechanical rail crane at our heritage railway we have a similar band brake system. old but works well
Roly Williams

Great idea provided it doesn't melt the plastic
Les

That is coming on well, it does pay to hoard bits now and again.

Funny he also lives in my workshop     ..
IndianaRog

Bernie, that is simply brilliant.  I had to stare at your photos for a few minutes to figure out where the zip tie went, but once I figured it out I thought "dang, that guy is clever"....
BK

Thanks for the comments, they are always welcome (nothing worse then posting pics and comments and have no reply)

Today I made a "gate" for the gear change, just to keep it positive.

Small winch.

No winch.

Main winch.

Just have to sort out a way to disengage the pawl on the main winch and the mechanics on the winch are done.
kno3

Nice work. The long lever on the small winch is a break?
TE1A_man

You could take one of those small, flat rubber bands and cut a section out and attach it to the inside of that zip tie to not only save the plastic from eventual destruction, but also provide much more friction.
Voodoo Steam

Very cool.
Thanks for sharing.

Eric.
BK

Well the winch is finished, done the plumbing and sealed the threads with locktite, I gave it 1/4" steam inlet into the oiler then 3/16" to each engine.

Now, gotta finish a "stand alone boiler" to drive it.   The work is never done, you do one job and that leads to another,      keeps me sane.
scorpion2nz

aahhhaaa time for your nemesis

a boiler
MrDuck

Brilliant work and I hope to see it running very soon
Voodoo Steam

Looking good, man.

Cheers.

things coming along very nicely, another BK special.

I've enjoyed this thread.

I love how you think 'em up, and build 'em up, Bernie.

Blummin, well done!   Thumbs up!
