Steamers go to school

Last week my History teacher approached me and asked if I could bring some of my steam engines in to demonstrate steam power to a class she was teaching, I agreed but was very worried because all the children at my school at Autistic like me but some are worse than others and my fear was that 1 would lunge and make a grab for 1 while it was in steam.

luckily most of the class knew me very well and I made sure to drum the dangers of steam toys into them at the beginning of the class.

anyway I took an assortment that I hoped would keep them interested, I was basically told to explain the engines and talk about them so I took each engine in turn and explained its history, where Id gotten it (usually referring to forum members like Moose and James) and they just loved it I mean they just never took there eyes off what I was holding and had a ton of questions to ask.

and they loved the demonstration of the TEA1 in steam running around the floor and the figure of James which I took to give an example of period attire from the time of steam rule (whatya know James is a teaching tool)

I was also asked to show pictures of my garden railway on the white board and now Iv got teachers asking if they can bring their classes to visit
Im expecting many more of these demonstrations to be asked of me

well done sir!

& your pictures are great too!

Very cool! I've found that students love steam engines! Glad to hear that you've sparked interest in not only the students but also the teachers!
yussufhippo

I agree: well done!
One of my students told me after she had seen my Maerklin 2cyl compound (reproduction) steaming up, that she now had understood! Steam engines drive machines - she had been wondering what people had been doing with all that steam ( a steam engine produces steam...)
If anybody is interested in some teaching ideas, I have some suggestions...

But it's great you have demonstrated this to your classmates!!!!!!!!!
Roly Williams

Well done!

Nice assortment of engines, I was imagining myself explaining the various uses of steam engines to a group, and you've covered all the bases with that selection, railway, road traction, marine, mill, logging. Excellent.

They are common over here, we have 16 of them around the school.  Look for Interactive Whiteboards.

Great to see you are also an educator Pauly.

Wow! I thought it was just a screen with the projector somehow built into it instead of overhead. I didn't realize it could do all that other stuff.

Our local school is still replacing chalkboards.

The school where I work had interactive blackboards in the D&T workshops until a year or so ago. Now we have whiteboards, markers and projectors but haven't gone for interactive whiteboards yet.

We were forced to remove the blackboards for H&S reasons - chalk dust etc!

Good to see that you found a way of getting to run steam engines at school!

When I was at school covering the industrial revolution was particularly dull, some live demonstrations of what we were talking about would have gone down a treat!
Burnmafingers

Well done Pauly, spread a little happiness and impart the knowledge ! As said, you took a fine selection of gear for the demonstration.

My son is autistic and at times he enjoys the process of filling the boiler, then the burner, oiling up and getting up to steam. When it is running he toots the whistle twice and then departs only to return 5 minutes later asking to fire up another one

Way to go Pauly!!
