Roundy,
There have been several forum postings in the past about stepper motors and one of our members (psantama on eBay), sells a ready to go stepper motor with appropriate diodes needed. They are too much for any Mamod to overcome I'm afraid, I have and SE3 and have experimented with various DC motors to find one it can turn sufficiently fast to light a bulb...I found one, but it is a simple "can" style DC motor NOT a stepper.
If you are planning only to hook up a generator to a Mamod...skip the stepper route, the Mamod's (maybe an SE4) can't quite produce the horsepower to power a stepper without bogging down.

I really dont have much experience with Mamods so I have not used them to drive a stepper, but Occlusion has a video of an se2 driving one of my Kollmorgen generators here:

Those are stiffer to drive than the ones I currently make. visit his videos, see the results he gets with them...

Roundy, I stand corrected...I forgot that Mr. Occlusion was able to get a stepper to work OK on an SE2.
As for where to get these...simplest route is thru Peter Santa Maria who replied above. He sells them set up with the proper diodes already wired in, saves a lot of hassle.

Just send Peter a PM and ask...

It's all in the gearing. I've run one of Peter's generators from both a SteamCo and Mamod SE2a and they work fine when using the small PTO's that come with those engines.
I think 6 volts is realistic with the small engines. Don't expect a pile of current, but it's enough to light some lights, or power a small radio.
The nice thing about the steppers, as done up by Peter, is that they do not suffer as badly as straight DC generators do with respect to increasing loads putting increased drag on the generator.
Example: shorting out my PMR DC dynamo with bring any engine of mine to a dead stop, save for the Jensen 20. Short out one of these steppers and it's hardly noticeable on a larger engine.
Peter's units offer the best jolt for your groat as far as I'm concerned, in a DC generator, and you don't need a brute engine to get decent output from them.
Lots of fun
