Nah they are ok for display, I for one would like to see one or two
Mamodman123

I think Fred meant running them at STIA

Can't see a problem with one or two for display

Aren't your MF twins engineered by you anyway?
MamodFan

replicas yes,
engineered yes,
toys yes
Mamodman123

Not a mamod then
James

And they are sold as being *non working*, so therefore it isn't a toy, it's a model

No, If they were they would not run as well as they do
James

A toy is designed to be played with, and in order to play with a steam toy, you have to steam it. It states that they shoudln't be steamed, or something along those lines.

I saw one with a mamod decal on it?
James

Same here!
MamodFan

Nothing To Do With Me.

All of my engines leave my hands looking as yours did when you got it.
As you know I would never try and pass one off as original that is why they are engraved.

Its Fred show and he can choose what goes or not and I'm not debating that point but to me Stuarts are also toys, admittedly well engineered and complex toys but still toys to me.

My reason for saying this is a Stuart isn't made to do any real work (excluding the big ones which are made to do work and the old small ones that were used by spys during the war), it's really only run for the pleasure of the owner so to me that makes it a toy to me.
James

My question is still unanswered, if these are not sold as working toys, how can they have a place at STIA? They must be models if not toys

Nah I know that

But I would never call it a mamod, its not, far superior infact
James

And don't toys have to pass some rules and laws and stuff to be called toys and to be suitable and safe for children to use?
MamodFan

James wrote:

They may be sold as none "STEAMING" models but they are fully functioning and tested on air before they are dispatched. It is left to the owner to decide what to do with them once they are in possession of it.

I am taking a number of my engines that I have hand made. All are in the style of pre war English engines. They are very simple toys that give me great pleasure to make and run. All of my own build engines will be running at STIA
James

But if they are capable of steaming, why don't you sell them as steaming?
MamodFan

Darren summed it up quite nicely

Yes they do

That is why you will see on those repro Tin toys from china and india being sold in this country as collectables for adults
James

Yes, but they are being sold as collectables, and that is like a model.

You are passing yours off as a toy, which must pass laws before it is officially a toy.

To be at steam TOYS in action, shouldn't it be a TOY?

And you are quite clearly saying it is, when it isn't legally!
James

I think as a rule, the person who comes out stating facts from the start will always end up on top in a debate, so I think it's time you stopped before you dig yourself in a hole that is too deep

Of course, I personally have no problems with any of your engines, I am not doubting your engineering capabilities, but I am just stating some facts.

Cross wires I think

I have a number of engines (MFTWINS) that i have made and dont sell to anyone. These are the engines I am calling toys and will be steaming.

one of my MFTwins no one else has one.
Mamodman123

I guess its a toy if you play with it, some people call cars "toys"
johnreid

The difference between Men and Boys is the price of their toys
James

Fair dos, but it still can't legally be called a toy, and in the STIA rules, Fred states that:

"Any home built boilers MUST be accompanied by a valid certificate of insurance if they are to be steamed."

http://www.fcrammond.clara.net/stiainvitation.htm

Which means that, without a valid certificate of insurance, it can't be steamed.

too true

some boys play with real aeroplanes, oh to have the money to do that.
Sandman

I think this has assumed great proportions over very little.

Who gives a toss anyway??

I for one don't care as long as it's steam
Steve_S

Whatever they are, I, for one, can't wait to see them steaming.

Nothing like a good bit of banter at 12:42am
James

Aye there's nowt wrong with a good discussion

But can I just ask one last thing?

If it is ok to steam these MF engines at STIA, is it ok to steam my home made loco?

Fred said you could get away with it

However what the point in steaming it? It won't work

I rename the no-co
James

It will work lad LOL

If Fred said I can steam it, why have a rule saying that home made boilers can't (without insurance certificate)?

I'm real confused, please help

Will it feck
MamodFan

IMPORTANT NOTES: The event is primarily for TOY steam engines. Any home built boilers MUST be accompanied by a valid certificate of insurance if they are to be steamed. If you have any toy engines with boilers in a doubtful state we would be grateful if they were merely displayed as static exhibits and  not steamed.

the boilers are not big enough to require a test cert but the last sentence could apply.

I like James' last picture on page two with the "please do not touch" sign. Now could any of you honestly walk up to a table that full and not touch something?

That lot were collected in just under 2 years, nearly everything you see on the table was bought by myself.

The ones that weren't:

MEC1 (given to me)
Living van (christmas present)
One of the TE1s is my old man's
Same with one of the MM1's
The SE1a workshop (christmas present)
MM2 (1st engine I ever got, bought for me by my old man)

Und das ist alles!
Mamodman123

The signs look top notch Jimmy!
