STIA report (Mamodmans)

In true traditional Mamodman style, I packed very early last morning (like 2 o'clock) decided what to take and packed them all up carefully, just about managed to finish and get enough sleep in time for the busy day ahead.

Woke up at about 9, packed the car and was out the door for about 9:45. After about 30-40 mins travelling with just the one wrong turn (literally yards from Abbey Pumping station) I arrived about 10:30ish.

The first person I met was the legend himself Jimmy boy, with his flat cap and northern ways. Went up to him by his car and said he'd bought himself a Bowman for 35 quid, and an unfired TE1a. As per usual for silly prices he practically stole them   . Made my way into the big shed, met SteamyJim (the solid fuel handler) and his grandad. Got my tea tickets and started to unload and display my engines. I had a quick look around the dealers tent but everything was expensive, I bartered a bloke down to 30 on a '65 SR1 but didn't buy it because I wanted something else.

The tent was well occupied with forum members, I met the legend that was SANDY! his enthusiasm and energy throughout the day was just unbelievable. Lewis' dad popped in so I knew SP man wouldn't be far away

We'd all set up in the big shed, Jimbo taking up about 4 tables with just about everything you would ever want in a collection. Steamyjim had already brought out his secret weapon Wilesco thing. A real highlight, the best Wilesco I've seen.

As the morning went on, lots of others arrived. Roly Williams brought his collection including the three cylinder SE3 as did Stilldrillin. There were so many forum members there it was like a football match. I can't name them all but MTA made a suprise appearance!

It wasn't long before I started to look around the tent, mainly for Mamods. I saw the SE4 proto-type which is pictured below, some fantastic workshops, a pre-war SE2, many many engines from all ages, shapes and sizes. I could talk all day and not describe half of them. MF brought his selection of home built engines and a Hobbies SE4 which was very nice.

Popped up to see Titan just before the public came in. Titan was running well and had a quick chat about the layout and Titan/Rosa in general. It wasn't long before I had Rosa steaming very very well, she never lets me down. I'll probably re-name her Ford (oi and you lot taking the michael over my car)   . There was a small fire with Rosa.... just about managed to blow it out after I over topped up a burner not the only disaster of the day!. Steely loco put in a real good performance too! a real treat to watch.

Early afternoon some of the other forum members arrived. Manxman turned up and we talked about the TE1 naturally   , Kritika turned up too which was great to see. MC_MC also came along. Minor1, lots more, Jimbo has the complete list   .

STEVE MALINS- yep he was there and I shook his hand   a true gent and a proper Mamod legend!

lots of engines ran through the day, My Bowman M135 ran really well and didn't explode. All Wilesco stationaries ran well, Steely's SEL was a bit of a struggle but his SE1 46 ran superbly!. SteamyJim was cramming solid fuel tablets into a fire with his bare hands . I managed to just about fire the SE4 but leaked a lot in several places. Never really got going but ran smooth as per usual. My Wilesco roller drew the crowds when my brother fired it on the floor. Sadly it fell to bits when it ran stationary and the nut landed in Watford I think   .

Funniest moment of the day was Jimbo's Fleichmann at the end. Took an age to fill between myself and me bro!. Used two SE3 burners which fetched the paint off and warped the firebox. What a cheer when it finally went though     everyone in the shed looked round and probably thought look at that rowdy lot. Went well in the end, kept getting caught on a metal gate sold as seen hay Moosey

New purchase!!

A beautiful new piston valve TE1a. It really is a wonderful Mamod. People say the build quality is down but this is built very well indeed. A good weight to it and it looks fantastic. Thanks to Forest for keeping me one until I got there. Definatly a must buy engine guys!

8_10 Brass Cleaner

Any better pictures of MamodFans creations??
James

That is a good description lad, I couldn't be bothered to type it all out LOL

It was just sooo good to meet all the different members!

Everyone were so friendly, shaking your hands and going "naa then meyart" apart from Stilldrillin, who said "Ayup me duck"

Oi oi David, could you give us the recipe for that flapjack??

Mum loves it, dad loves it, and I love it
mc_mc

I enjoyed the flapjack too.

Honest I was only joking when I suggested that we should steep it in meths and use it to run the engines.   (although it would of worked brilliantly!).
Steve_S

That flapjack was fantastic... could be the official forum dish.
IndianaRog

MM and all the others attending and photographing...we were with you in spirit.  Seemed another wonderful STIA is under your belt.

Here's hoping Sandy had a clear lens and this year's DVD will equal or better 2007.

Thanks all for sharing the pics and videos....wow!!!

Rog
James

No disrespect to any of the other exhibiters, but everywhere you went there were Mamod Forum hats and shirts. We practically stole the show today
Les

What a lot to see, wish I was there. Thanks for all the pictures.
Reid

All and in all detail, it was a great day for the English.
A good day too now for us far-away-wish-we-weres (English).

Thank you for the reports, and MM in particular, thanks for the  splendid pictures.

More huzzahs to follow for sure!
shaygetz

Thank you for the pictures...I wish I could have been there.
johnreid

I hope Sandy has lots and lots of footage, the still photos alone make me wish all the more that I could have traveled the distance.

However, I do not want to pressure Sandy as I am sure he is working feverishly as it is.
Nick

Great stories. I'd like to hear more about James' Fleischmann.

Just curious MM, do you use the forum names when talking to eachother?
kusuchi

Thanks to all, particularly  MM, James and Rob  for the extensive coverage of STIA 2008.  I have really enjoyed everyone's pics and videos.  Although miles away and, regretably from the south of England, (if anywhere, James), it has been great to share in your experiences and enthusiasm.

Hopefully there will be more tomorrow.
Nick

Oh, I am sure it will be more than just tomorrow. You should also check out the dvd when it's finished. I'm sure you could get last years at the same time.
Wallace

Great pics MM. Great review too
steamyjim

Great pics MM!!!!!

I like how we had the table set out...same again next year
bessytractor

I shall definitely attend next year!

Thanks for the great pics MM, I'm looking forward to videos of your new tractor.
Mamodman123

Great photos and great stories - I envy those of you able to attend. Thanks for letting us in on your day - makes it almost like we were there. Can't wait to get my hands on the DVD (and maybe last year's as well).

Great videos and pictures. It was good to see your Wilesco mobile running, but it sounds like it didn't last.
Les

Thumbs up!

Nope, oh well it was good while it lasted
johnreid

I hope I am not being rude in asking, but what happened with the Wilesco?

The piston rods fell apart
johnreid

My D10 did that right out of the Factory sealed box. I was lucky to find all of the bits.
Must be a Wilesco problem.

I've noticed earlier that both screws for the piston are missing   so I now need two
johnreid

My American pick up probably steer around corners better than your Ford.

There again it was built to. Anti sway bars, Koni Shocks, wide tires.

I like my Wilescos, do not take me wrong, but they are not built as well as the Jensens or Mamods I own.

I can turn on a sixpence in my Fiesta, it's only the size of a shoebox

I had no problems with Mamods on the day. Saying that, the other Wilesco stationary went very well 2-3 times. Whistle leaks even when the handle is down though
James

I'm pissed off you missed the 75 steaming mate!

If so, then you should have a twin name, Mr.  MamodMamodman

Now let us include your mother, for she deserves credit too, and we have:

That's a common problem with German engines in adult films.
