Still working on the Schoenner

I understand that the boiler on these old German machines had a purple tint.  Can anyone tell me if the tint is achieved by treating it with selenium dioxide (gun bluing)?  The chemical seems to put a purple cast on brass.

I read from mirko ( dampszauberer) confirming that the gun bluing will do the job -In his opinion.  Which seems to be well repsected....
