Sunday Running

Finished all my yard jobs early today so I headed for the shed.  Ran my recently purchased Bassett Lowke Enterprise and my Bowman 234

Here is the bassett Lowke Mogul for comparison, the Enterprise is a simpler loco and a better runner

I have been after an Enterprise for a long time, when this one arrived I steamed it but it was not happy.  It had a big leak between the cylinder and the valve block     I had a go at fixing it after much consideration and was amazed at my own work.  I did have some phone help from an expert though.

The cylinder assembly was removed and seperated, cleaned up and reassembled, a bit like a solder sandwich.  You put some solder on each face, wipe it accross with a cotton rag, clamp the two sections together and heat them up.  All being well it joins together and you then put a small fillet of solder around the joins, very small amount.  No pics were taken as all my concentration was on the job.

Here are two short vids of the Bowman running with 3 wicks covered -

Thanks mate

Very jealous of your new loco.
Can never decide whether to watch your locos or everything else on your layout when you post a vid.
Your Bowman ran well, much better than mine which at the moment can't pull its own weight with 6 burners lit.
Rob

nice, i would love a bassett lowke mogul.
Sandman

Oh, I do like that.

Thanks for posting Paul.

Layout is very bare at the moment as I didn't want everything covered in oil.  I don't know why yours won't run, there is not much to them.
Les

Very nice indeed, thanks for sharing it with us.

Do you have the lead weight in yours?

I think I have 3 problems to deal with.
One is a kinked steam pipe.
Two no felt pads
Three pistons may be worn.

I like to see a bowman 234 running ! Ihave no highrail  gauge 0 track so I  have to wait with the railtest on my 234. My " Maggie" behaves well under steam on Blocks !

cheers Joe
Benji

Excellent stuff!  Very nice!

Bassett-Lowke 4-4-0 Enterprise

Hi, I just bought a Bassett-Lowke Enterprise  and it needs some TLC.  Do you know of a source for scale bits like running lanterns, coupling steam hoses (not working just detail eye candy) etc.? I emailed Brandbright and the reply was dissapointing, I suppose they are very busy. Anyroad have you heard of any R/C conversion kits or plans or seen someone who has done such a mod successfully?
Also does the Bowman 2-3-4 have a throttle and reverse?
Minor1PJG

Bowman 234 - throttle & reverse

There's no throttle or reverse, these are go forward at full throttle engines

To throttle back put a cap on some of the burner wicks and to reverse you need to uncouple and turn the engine round

Don't burn your fingers

No, sorry to tell you, but the bowman 234 s  are only forward runners as most of the ancient oscillating engines of that time are . Constructing a revesing system makes the locos even more expensive than they used to be during their building time  and please donīt forget they were built as toys, nothing like toys ( - Itīs unbellieveable when you see the auction prices for live steam locos today but itīs a fact - )  They had to be as plain as possible to have the young operators and their watching fathers in mind : Built for hauling a couple of tinplate waggons around an oval track around the Christmas tree ! I like them for their plainness and their  history

Please donīt look at them under modern aspects: They are the ancestors of our Roundhouse or Regner Steamlocos!

cheers Joe
Who owns six modern and two tinplate live steam locos

There is no end to what I want I need to get some caps for my Bowman burner too.
