Super surprise!I had a lovely surprise in the post today, Mogogear had made and sent me this perfect little funnel cap for my Thames saloon launch.
Thanks mate, you made my day!

Oh man, that is so cool.

Oh good Miles-I hope it fits and is not too loose......all stacks need a cap...That is indeed a splendid launch and it looks so nice in that soft light.
This was a Karma thing for me ...
When I first joined this site Bogstandard did the same for me as I had no lathe and he knew me not much at all....I merely passed on the favour to a friend.I am sure Miles will find something to do in turn for someone.
Cheers

I try hard to keep Pay It Forward in mind as I go about my daily life, it pays back by the hundredfold, plus it feels good to do a good deed.

kno3....I know you are new around these parts.......you have a hull lurking around anywhere?...........
EDIT..Sorry realized kno3 already posted his splendid tug!!!

Mo, you have a pretty good way with moving a bit of metal around to create a lovely chimney cap!

Thanks Rog--I am a rank amateur compared to you, Mark and Tony and others....
If you saw the inside I did not finish the inside radius that well...still learning But I am getting better. The Atlas is so much better at cutting than my efforts on My Unimat...I wish I could have turned out things like Mark does on his Unimat

Yes I did last night.
Now where could I see more pictures of this beautiful Thames launch, with the engine etc?

Miles, that is simply beautiful...love the saloon with pitcher and drinking glasses plus the plush seating area...very inviting!
Am I right that the engine beneath that shrouding is an SEL marine unit? Those are quite robust little engines and I'd love to see how it moves that boat.

OK- now I put together -I didn't realize the engine at the STL event was the one from your launch... nice presentation......She is fitted out to match the boat so well.
A piece of brass rod and plate for the rudder, a tiller handle, another piece of brass rod( silicone hose to connect it to the engine) and a propeller you are sailing!

Very nice boat

Thanks for the extra pictures.
It's a very nice looking steam plant. Is that an alcohol burner? Could you take a picture of it?

thanks for all the great comments everyone.
Rog, the engine and boiler is a Maxwell Hemmens plant, the smallest they made. It's been modified a little, with the addition of a bigger tank on the burner, a displacement lubricator, and an engine cover made to match the boiler.
I haven't sailed her unfortunately since the running time of the engine is so short; the boiler only holds a small amount of water. a great risk of her running out of chuff in the middle of the pond.
However, Whitestone pond, a favourite of mine that's been filled with rubbish and algae for years, is being renovated this year, and that will be small and shallow enough to provide a safe place to sail her.

that's right kno3, it's an alcohol burner. the valve handle is just a cover for a simple filler cap.

Interesting. I notice that the alcohol level in the tank is higher than in the burner. What keeps it from overflowing?
|

only the vacuum in the tank. the capilliary action of the gauze under the mesh slowly draws the alcohol out of the tank. It does flood if you don't fill it at an angle and then put the cap on quick!

Thanks! Those two pipes, do they stop at the burner or go further in in and in the tank?
How much water does the boiler hold?

She's a beautiful boat Miles.

Great to see that Mo- what did you make it from?
Lovel gesture as well

a brass plumbing fitting.. used a boring bar to remove the internal threads and then a profile tool to smooth it up

the pipes stop at the burner, and enter the tank at the bottom, both pipes are identical. the tank holds 20ml of meths, and the boiler 80ml of water.
