Talk about exploding solid fuel tablets ...Solid fuel tablets aren't the only things that explode.
In our office at work, there is a plastic container with a hole in the top, in which we are supposed to put used batteries for recycling - a great idea. Today, as I walked past said container, I heard a bang followed by a tinkling noise. I looked round to see the end cap of a battery still rolling along the desk top, several feet away from the container, and smoke issuing from the hole 
I immediately thought of MM's signature - I wonder why

... gosh, I was just thinking you almost got shot by an empty battery!
How many go into the container? Maybe if moisture gets in there, and one of the batteries is cracked, some chemical reaction kicks off, leading to that explosion.

Now that is something you wouldn't expect to happen...
I had a similar incident happen to me last week:
One lunchtime last week, my mates and I were sitting around a table when BANG.
One of their bottles simply blew its top off! You have to be careful with that Tesco peach spring water you know

IF a short occurs too. I knew someone that threw a spare Cell Phone battery on the front seat of his car only to watch the car burn a half hour later, the battery must have shorted against his seat belt hardware.

The container is about 4 inches diameter by about 8 inches tall, and it was about half full when this happened, so you can have a rough guess at how many there were. I'm guessing that two not-so-dead batteries shorted each other out and got hot. It's easy to see why they tell you not to dispose of them in a fire.

I had a bottle of Lucozade once that split all down the side it was brilliant

Me mate Moody, he has a rate chunky head, he were shaking this tin of Coke up for about an hour and half, came out of English, cobbed it against a wall and it were like "Eeeee"

one night at scouts, we did some cooking on open fires. one of the thicker lads brought some sausages in a tin to put on, the ones in bryne. about 30 mins later there was a great bang and the remains of the tin on the other side of the fire pit. he didnt take the top off so it was just like a boiler and exploded at the weakest point. luckily no one was hurt, but it was bloody funny after to see the tin so far away with no sausages about.

At high school, someone cracked open a bottle of Panda Pops on my head

Doing the Mentos in the diet coke thing is quite entertaining. You can get a real jet out of it that goes a good 20+ feet with the proper apperture. I once soaked myself in cheap diet cola doing it, although the proper Coke stuff works better.
