i won this off ebay nothing special looks like the chimney has been bodged but i am going to replace it anyway here's some pictures off the auction.

i will post stage by stage what i have done here i am planning to paint the boiler navy blue but really dark navy and the wheels black  and some of the acseories off steam for fun but they are closed till the 24 of august because of family holidays

the next post will be in a week when i get it as i am off to the lake district next week
Wallace

Looks like a good engine to work with
Burnmafingers

i would love to but there are two reasons

1. it has not arrived yet i only bought it yesterday
2. we are off on monday
3. my parents probably wont let me

redbilly

I have this model ;bought it new.I have run it a few times and find that the tractor will seldom pull its weight.I think its to heavy and the belt drive won't do what gears will do.I favour the Wilesco with  a lighter frame. Comments please

i have another new and a wilesco the wilesco has much more trque than the mamod as it is gear right and a better piston but i think mamods have quite alot of character and are a really strong model but like you say it makes it heavy
Ross

just orederd loads of parts off steam 4 fun wont be posted till the 24th at earliest though

but it gives me time to strip and repaint the engine and redo tht chimney
Les

Good luck with the restoration and have a great holiday.

theres a full size steam gondola near our village should get some good pics of it

just leaving now bye
Jack

I will enjoy seeing it in its new colours, enjoy the rebuild
Ross

got it today the canopy rivets are loose but i can replace them it looks as if he has repaired the chimney with epoxy or something like that

also i am planning to shorten the canopy has anyone got any ideas for the supports to go on the front of the canopy to stop it falling forward ill put a post in help me anyway
Ross

just steamed it runs like a beast! going to start and strip it down now
Ross

took the chimney off it was just epoxy and i could get a knife underneath it was wobbly and i can see why they fixed it although it was a bit overkill putting that much epoxy on Shooting im taking off the wheels and giving them a lick of paint tommorow

Ross

cleaned the pistons up and shortened the canopy at the kglr workshop!

Ross

heres the wheels which are now black just need one of those gold paint pens to do the dots.

all the parts engine isnt fully stripped down yet

the shortened canopy

AzRob

Keep us updated! Have you thought about getting some Meccano gears and making it gear-driven? I've thought about doing that if I can get my hands on another TE1A at a decent price.
Ross

re painted the canopy scuttle supports and fire box i am srting to flat off the boiler also. i brought some brass well its a cylindrical strip to keep the canopy up right on the front end

I know this is not the right thread but this sounded like a plea for help.

Well redbilly the best thing you should do is run the engine a couple of dozen times "light" to run it in. Once the surface of the piston is rubbed in it will do a lot better.

Try and get forward and reverse to work at both slow and fast using the "notches" on the reversing lever. Use plenty of oil. If not all positions work there may be a blockage or misalignment. If so you should take it back as faulty.

If a head of steam makes the engine work well in both directions it just needs to be run in.

When you are happy you have a free running engine make sure you lubricate all the wheels and it should run just fine.

I have a number of Mamod TE and SRs, The one I had as a lad has been steamed loads of times and goes like the wind. The newer ones are stiff and can be unsatisfying. One won't go forwards and clearly needs work.

Please persevere, one way or another it will be rewarding.
Ross

put the first coat on the boiler today it looks good i will get some pics later
Ross

painted the boiler today and yesterday just got to paint the smoke box but i am going to let the paint cure for about a week or so

Hi,
I thought about buying a mamod steam roller off ebay cheap and restoring it. But with only starting the hobby in the last couple of months would it be hard to restore one?
i do have acess to my dads workshop with all tools you could think of!!
Thanks,
Tom

Very nice Restoration your doing of your TE1a.

Almost! Awesome price, but I underestimated the cost of shipping across the pond, sadly. Someone got a great deal on that. I may just end up pulling my one and only TE1A apart and "hot-rodding" it anyway.

i think i will put her toghether tonight not revealing her yet though as there is still things to do
Ross

ok so heres the last picture before i reveal it i might put the revealing thread seperate to save this from getting clogged up

newsteamer123

very nice
now put some spinners on there
Dr. Rog

Absolutely fabulous

I note you kept the flash marks around the chimney, interestingly authentic.   (jealousy).

The chimney and smokebox door look very good indeed. The "proper" brass top is so much better than the "drop on" type. Your paint finish is very attractive indeed.

I hope you keep this thread, I hate having incomplete threads, I can never find the next piece of the story.
Les

That looks good and please carry on with the final reveal in this thread.
