Good tip there!

I've not had one break for a while, but they can do, so be careful!

Flywheel should be a tight fit or screwed. You can unscrew the front wheels be turning them... that's about as far as you can go
willsy

how about th fire box as is badly rusted

Fancy drilling rivets?
willsy

is that the only way?
and are they easy to replace?
would it work if i masked off the area and painted it black?

Yes, yes and probably another yes

I wouldn't drill the rivets though, not worth it
willsy

willsy

willsy

fired it and runs very wel except has a leak from the pipe that is joined to the boiler
willsy

here are some pics and as you can see will need a bit of work

Nick

It does need a good cleanup, but I'm sure it will look great in the end.

TRAPPERKEEPER

Looks like a great project, I like to see TE1a's taken care of
shaygetz

Gotta admit, it kinda looks cool all gormed up like that...looks like a well loved machine.
Manxman

A good solid toy engine. Bit of a clean and re-paint. I'm looking forward to the pics. Going to be very nice.
willsy

when it comes to painting should i try and match the paint colours or does the colour scheme not matter to much
Nick

It's a common engine, so it doesn't matter much at all.
Les Marsh

It's your choice at the end of the day. You just have to look at what people have been doing to them.
Nick

What are you doing about the rusty chrome?
willsy

rusty chrome gonna be painted black after it has been treated other colours for the rngine are burgandy and gold bits
Nick

Flat black would look great on there.
Les Marsh

I look forward to seeing what you'll come up with.  I'd like to get one in similar shape to paint a matte black with yellow wheels...or maybe green wheels...the red does look sharp though...guess I'll climb that hill when I get there.
willsy

dumb question i know but what paint should be used as tried using plasti-kote enamel on the boiler and engine frame and it didnt take. but fire box all went well used bbq paint
James

Wow! We've got exactly the same dog pen as in your picture! One slight difference, we've got a lamb in ours

When painting bare metal, you should use an etch primer first.
willsy

gonna sound really thick now but what is an etch primer
Les Marsh

willsy wrote:

It's a metal primer, use it before putting your paint on.
willsy

willsy

pretty much, they are just a tight fit on the axle.  Make sure they are square when you tap them on.
