The Mamod Meteor

As requested, I am posting a couple of pictures of the Mamod Meteor that I acquired several years ago. It has never been fired and is in perfect condition. Mamod only made these models for three years, from 1949-52. They, along with their electric-driven counterpart, the Conquerer, were the only commercial "failures" that Mamod ever produced. Apparently they were too expensive for the toy market of the time and for some reason people were becoming less inerested in steam launches.

I am ignorant about those, how were they fired?
That is a real specimen, museum quality piece there.
Drexelius

The boiler was fired by a "three-wick burner" according to the Malins bible. This part was apparently separated from the boat at some point as it was not included in the purchase (unfortunately).

Oh man......thats a beast!

Do you have the burner? Thanks so much for sharing that with us.

I don't feel worthy

Unfortunately I do not have the burner - don't know when that was separated from the boat.

That certainly is a beauty Drex. I saw Mr. Crammond's Meteor at Tilford earlier this year, but sadly didn't get to see it sailing on the boating lake...
SillyBilly

I think I probaly saw that meteor sailing, my dad loved it.

Beautiful You don't see many of those in any condition - let alone mint Was the burner a standard Mamod type? You might be able to find one of those on Ebay.
flywheel61

That's a brilliant acquisition, , and in mint condition too, a great piece of mamod history, well done.

Cheers

The Meteor burner is similar to a standard mamod three wick burner BUT the meths tank is square in plan and the bottom is profiled to fit the vee shaped hull. The bottom sheet rises slightly above the top plate at either side giving a sort of lip. The burner tube is soldered in at the apex of the vee so every drop of meths is consumed. The other odd point is that the brass filler plug is hexagonal. The whole thing is painted red and must have cost an arm and a leg to produce. Nice though.

OMG that is like the best thing EVER!!! there was one of these in my local antiques shop window years ago when i was small, should have got dad to buy it! We've always wanted one, and if I did get one I'd definitely be sailing it!
Cranko

Its all been said, you are a very lucky person to have such a wonderful craft in your possession
Manxman

Brill, and great for the forum. Another first and I don't think we'll see another one of those for a very long time. I love it.
