The SL1 that nobody wantedA few weeks back I bought this poor little loco with a set on ebay. As usual the seller "forgot" to mention the attempted solder incident . Its not the soldering that bothers me too much its the fact that he burnt the paint
Also the whistle thread is loose so I'm going to have to solder it through the sight glass which should be interesting .
Its all going to have to be drilled apart fixed up then put back together again . The solder under the dome is worse than it looks in the picture, a lot worse!!!
What should i do about the paint though?

Bloody Hell! What did he use to solder it with - a flame thrower? He didn't even bother to remove the side tanks.
You have two choices with the paint - strip it or leave it. You'll have difficulty matching the colour well enough for a touch up. Persinally, I'd strip it and repaint it. The only problem will be the transfers. Can you get replacements? Repainting the boiler is no problem.
As for the whistle bush - you're lucky it wasn't the safety valve. Even with the whistle, it won't be easy to solder inside. You'll have to make sure it's absolutely clean.

I know, it must have been a flame thrower either that or it was a blind chimp .
The transfers are almost impossible to find I'm thinking I might just leave it and fire it. Ok it'll look poor but it'll only be a work horse I guess . I could try and mix the paint and brush it on, although it would look crap wouldn't it?
I know, if it was the safety valve thread then I would have scrapped the boiler! Maybe i'll solder and sell it to someone who is braver than I with the nitro mors

The other alternative would be to forget trying to fully restore it to original condition - repaint it without the transfers and put name plates on it.

I did stick it on ebay Mike! as part of a set.
A couple of clowns offered 75 quid, so it went unsold

I had the steam dome bush come loose on my Mamod, was an easy fix and I did it without pulling it apart.
Wire brush on the dremel to remove paint from around bush, only about 2 to 3mm circle of it.
Half filled the boiler.
Filled the meths tank and lit it when the water was at boil used my little butane blow torch to resolder it and it worked fine. I obviously had romeve the steam dome so it could not build up any pressure in the boiler.

Yeah!
The track alone I could probably sell for around 50, it's a silly price!
Can't blame them for trying, but no chance

Missing buffers and cab looks to have taken a knock...Not too bad but 80 quid is pushing it a bit
|
Chris

I looked at that, but the starting price would have been my top bid on that. Needs some work, and you have to wonder what else might be wrong with the buffers missing and the roof looking bent.

For the loco, yes, but there's 16 lengths of track included. That's £48 at new price - must be worth £24 if it's in good nick.

If it was a curcuit it would be a different thing altogether!

OK, you'd need another 8 curves to complete a circuit - another £12 - 16 SH on Ebay.
