The Virgin Island's Table - Exploring the York Bolton. Done

                    Richard and Andrew
                          welcome you
to the Virgin Islands STWWW table!

Andrew has a fantastic concept for a themed entry which we will be entering next year.  This year we’ll simply be spending the weekend doing exactly what we would have been doing anyway:

Exploring the York Bolton Steam Plant

Our presentation will evolve ‘live’, as we learn about, photograph and video our new favorite toy!

Steve_S

Wow!
Celsius 100

Looking forward to your forthcoming event.
stenella

Good god man, is that a poster you're using as a backdrop ?! Those clouds could not have been more perfect!
kusuchi

The plant has been built from one of Historic Steam’s self assembly kits.  Included with the plant were the assembly instructions and drawings for both the York Steam Plant and the Bolton Mill Engine:

It also came complete with operating instructions, all required tools, paints and lubricants:

Andrew

NEXT: Some general pictures of the plant in it’s new home!

In it's display case.

The complete plant.

Side view, showing, left to right, York Boiler with red auto ignition button, whistle and firebox door, condensate tank and gas cylinder enclosure.

Rear view, showing, left to right, gas cylinder enclosure, water tower and the Bolton Mill Engine.

Front view, showing, left to right, Bolton Mill Engine, Control Panel and York Steam Plant.

kusuchi

So what does all this stuff do?

Here are the pages from the Operating Instructions that identify the important parts:

So how does it all work?
redryder

Magnificent !

Again, congrats to Richard and Andrew for acquiring that fine piece of hardware.

Like this!

My Dad shot the pictures and I edited the video with Pinnacle Studio 14!     Running on air for the first time!

Sorry about the Cicadas in the background!
kusuchi

Why do You Tube videos take so long to upload?  I’ve been sitting at my desk for nearly two hours waiting to post Andrew’s video!

The York Bolton has finally settled into a groove and has been slowly ticking over at 8 psi for the whole time I have been waiting,

Tomorrow we’ll post pictures and video that, hopefully, will explain every detailed aspect of the operation of this plant.

Hope to have it on live steam before the end of the event!
BK

Beautiful engine, did you do the 3weeks training to run it??
flywheel61

A very different concept, and a brilliant engine to do it with - well done Andrew & Richard.

Cheers

Chris
Dauntless

Wow Richard, that is absolutely stunning so much detail I can't wait to see the video!

Paul.
Les

Wow, that is superb, it runs brilliantly and come with the most comprehensive tool/maintenance kit I have ever seen for a steam engine.
Swift Fox

A great theme for your table Richard & Andrew, looking forward to seeing more of this magnificent steam plant.
Roly Williams

What a magnificent engine!

I notice at the end of the video it says "air by Andrew". He must have massive lungs.
Sandman

Poetry in motion Andrew.

What a great idea for a table.
Celsius 100

Outstanding.
Even the toolkit is first-class.
magpie38

superb, lovely and informative, thanks Richard and Andrew
Steam Models

I've gone cross-eyed just trying to look at it.

Only three weeks?
It looks like you need an engineering degree to operate the plant
Dave S

A truly world beating steam plant.  Its just so well made and such a great runner, brilliant
Stitch1615

Absolutely beautiful and brilliant!
I'll likely never own one but I can always look at yours.
Thanks for the posting.

The Bolton Mill Engine - details

One of the many assembly drawings:

General Overview:

Flywheel and Governor:

Oil Damper Reservoir and Control Panel:

Pipework:

RocDoc

Wow ... simply wow !!!!!

Pete
Sandman

Jeez, Andrew.

Every lot of pics just keep getting better mate.
kusuchi

The Bolton Mill Engine - Control functions

Oil Damper Reservoir and Control Panel.

Oil Damper Reservoir - The reservoir is filled with light machine oil prior to every run via the square blanking plug on the top.  The control wheel on the front is then fully opened.

Number 1 Valve - When opened, this blow down valve expels water from the sight glass directly to the condensate tank.

Number 2 Valve - When opened, this blow down valve expels condensate from the displacement lubricator diectly to the condensate tank.  The steam valve can then be closed and the displacement lubricator refilled.

Number 3 Valve - In the open position this valve recirculates water from the supply line at the bottom of the water tower to the return line at the top of the water tower.  When closed water is pumped from the tower directly into the boiler.

Number 4 (Blank) - Supply line to the water pump.

Number 5 (Blank) - Exhaust Steam line to the chimney.

Number 6 Valve - Main steam valve.

Condensate drains.

After initial starting of a cold engine, condensate can be drained from the cylinder and steam chest by briefly opening the three drain valves, either side of the Displacement Lubricator, with a special key.

He just operates the controls on the compressor.

Note, however, that every video posted this weekend will be edited entirely by him with no assistance from me whatsoever!
Mamod58

That is a beauty!

Very instructive (and a lot of fun too)

Wunderbar

This is sweet and very enjoyable. you engine is very complete, mine is missing the piston damper and the regulating valve unit. Strange coincidence, your serial number 00272 and mine is 00276  just 4 engines between us

Thanks Kenneth!

Do you know how many plants were finally made?
benchmark

I have no idea, but they cant be that many considering the price they sold for. I think someone said they actually closed due to less than expected sales. i will keep an eye out for the highest serial number i can find.
kd02

I'm speechless, absolutely amazing,
Bugsy

Nothing less than a work of art!
You must both be very proud to own such an engine.
I wish I could edit videos as well as Andrew can.
kusuchi

'We're sorry to interupt this programme.  We're currently experiencing technical difficulities.  Please do not adjust your set.  Normal programming will resume as soon as possible.'

As soon as we can sort out the problems with the second video, almost the entire balance of the presentation is waiting, ready to go.  Part of the problem with a 'live' table, I guess.  The only scheduled item remaining to be completed tomorrow is the grand finale!   Video of the first steaming of our new plant, which will take place in the morning.
ozsteamdemon

Thats absolutely beautifull , museum quality and technically awesome !

Well done you guys !!!

......... and i can say that without fear of favoritism from one judge to another .

Knowing that neither of us are eligable to win anything?

Andrew, on the other hand...................

............but there's no prize for video editing!   .............

...........and, even if there were, Sandy would win it hands down.

Maybe next year!

But seriously, Geoff, many thanks for your kind comments!     Much appreciated!  We're both having a great time!
Andrew

Operating the Bolton Mill Engine.

Finally, the video is ready to be posted.  Sorry about the spelling!   As long as this has ended up taking, my Dad said I didn’t have time to fix it and republish the movie.

Les

It says "this video is unavailable".
Sandman

I'm getting Video Unavailable mate.
Les

I am glad it is not just me, I might pop back to the bar and have a pint while Andrew sorts it out.
kusuchi

Apologies for the delay.  After technical problems with Pinnacle Studio 14, I’ve been trying to upload this video to You Tube for nearly eight hours. This video is short of many of the features that Andrew wanted to incorporate!  Transitions, subtitles and audio overdubs all had to be omitted in order to get anything up at all.

………and we seemed to have failed at that too.  Back to bed.  I'll try again tomorrow!

An excellent tutorial of the amazing features of this beautifull piece of machinery .
Well done you guys !

The video was a pleasure to watch Andrew.

Well worth the effort in making it.

Well presented, informative and downright entertaining.

Well done.

A true masterpiece of a steam plant,  has a finer factory built plant ever been sold I wonder?
You can see where the money goes by carefully looking at the details.

Steamed the York Bolton for the first time tonight.  Video currently uploading to You Tube.

We didn’t have a C 250 gas cylinder so had to make do with a C 500.  Works fine but doesn’t really look the part as it’s too big for the enclosure.

Learned a few things along the way:

The ceramic main burner takes a while to heat up.  Once it does, it builds to operating pressure extremely quickly.  Unlike the gas burners I’ve been used to so far, it’s almost completely silent.

The sight glass blow down valve works a treat at low pressures.  At operating pressure, however, all it does is instantly fill the condensate tank!

The steam valve only operates over a very small range of its overall motion.   A very delicate touch is required to make fine adjustments in engine speed.

The steam chest and cylinder condensate drains work beautifully.  The initial condensation is blown out the instant the engine starts, after which they are closed.

Video soon, I hope!

The York Bolton under steam!

The culmination of our table for this year.  Over the weekend Andrew and I have had a marvelous opportunity to research and explore our latest acquisition in enormous detail,  We studied the instructions and poured through over 50 construction drawings. We’ve learned a great deal and had a great time doing it.  Hope you have enjoyed sharing our journey.

Richard and Andrew

What a great end to your table seeing it in steam, i must say that plant certainly has all the 'bells & whistles'. It has been fun to learn more about it and what all those pipes and other bits do.
Sandman

Thoroughly enjoyed that.

It's truly a privilege to watch such a wonderfully engineered engine in steam.

Well done Andrew and Richard.
