This year / next year

As the year comes to a close I was wondering how many models we have brought between us in 2007 and what are our plans for 2008. I know I started the year wanting to expand my collections to include makers I don't have and to try and make my collection a little bit more global (while of course staying with mobiles).

And, I think by and large I've done that. My older German collection has grown, I've picked up three models from New Zealand, one new American model (due here before Christmas), and my Mamod / Wilesco mobile collection has seen a few new purchases.

As for plans for 2008, well, I guess more of the same. I still want a better collection of Weeden mobiles. I will end 2007 with two, but they are just diferent versions of the same model. Weeden did 4 standard mobiles and a couple of rarer earlier examples. I'll be looking out for one of them. Mss still have not yet released their second Brighton Runner, maybe that will hit the shops in 2008. I'll still keep hoping for a Renown Roller or Scorpion Lorry from Oz and I'm sure at some point I'll buy at least one scratch / unknown little model.

One of the things I love about our hobby is looking at other peoples collections. I feel you can sometimes tell the newer person to the hobby, those with maturing collections and those with special areas of interest. So how was 2007 for others and what are the plans for 2008.

I dont keep to good a track on mine in case my wife finds the list but I would guess about 25-30 additions and about 10-12 sold . Total is now around 181 at last count
tmuir

My main goal this year was to get more Australian models and a few more locos and downsize my British stationeries and I've pretty well done that.
I'm still haven't managed to get a Scorpion or Renown loco which will be high on my want list for next year but as in the last year I have seen zero Scorpion Locos and only one Renown loco there is a good chance I won't get one next year but we will wait and see.

An interesting question, Manx.  A little over a year ago I joined this forum, as a collector I had mostly mint or near mint engines. I guess I've probably doubled my collection in thei time but mainly engines that I could steam.

I've gone more towards statonaries, and away from mobiles, as the Americans would say, "there's more bang for your bucks),     .

I've gone just about as far as I can with Mamod, except an SC engine and now I seem to becoming more internationally diverse.  On the home front, rather than an OZ mobile next year I'll be chasing a Renown with windmill in an hopefully relatively complete condition.  Also I'll be looking at some of the older German accessories to run off my early vertical Bing, I'm particularly fascinated with many of thier water devices,

Cheers

I had a pretty good year (for once!)

I have built two engines, and also acquired a good SP2.  I repaired my MM2 (will film but have run out of meths!) and dolled up my TE1A.  I also acquired a restoration project TE1.
Stilldrillin

I`ve bough 1, a scruffy little SEL.

Sold 3.

Built 3 into 1.

I`m going backwards, methinks!
mc_mc

I've been keeping a folder showing my purchases and eBay listing print outs so I know exactly what I've bought when and for how much.  (I've not got to worry about a wife finding out!)

I started collecting in January this year after finding this forum.  So I've gone from zero to twenty six engines at a cost of over £1600   (and am bidding on three more at the moment ).

Next year I'm going to try to rein in a little and only go for:

- A Bowman or two
- Flame licker engine
- Mamod flat bases
- Jensen 75
- Maybe a gas fired Mamod William loco
- German engines Doll etc.
- Anything else that looks interesting

But it's my hobby and I'm sure there are worse things that I could be spending my money on and at the end of the day I think my collection is probably worth at least what I paid for it, so it's not money down the drain.  Add to that the enjoyment I get from running / fixing / restoring / playing with my engines and the friends I've found on here and it's all well worth it!

I also hope to start work on making a few of my own  (still waiting for my materials to arrive from the web purchase I made last week).

Bought seven and am selling one, to buy another
Sadly I doubt I will buy many more, I plan on enjoying those which I have in the coming year. Plus enjoying the hundreds of purchases that you all make.
John Chapman

A Bowman M167, has been repainted - not very well - and needs returning to the correct colours

A Jensen 75, not the current solid fueled version but the meths fired one from the '50s.  As far as I know (Rog or Cedge will confirm) this 75 was the only spirit fired engine Jensen ever made

A nice little Falk vertical in very original condition, probably pre WW1.

A Cyldon 13/2

A Cyldon 13/4

And a 1929 Meccano engine, courtesy of Mooseman

For the first time this year I have bought engines with the express intention of selling them on.

It has also been a year of Mamods for me...I started 2007 with none, and I finish with 8, including my beautiful little '46 SE1, and my SL2.

Other very noteworthy additions this year: my Mersey 54R, which is just poetry.....my Wormar Super C.

Best experience of this year? completing my Midwest Fantail Launch, which was a swap with Manxman (he got my Wilesco roller).

Nicest project this year: making my Bowman/Wormar workshop. Gorgeous!

Biggest disappointment: none! I've had a bloody good year, I've been incedibly lucky with my purchases.

Plans for next year: I'd really like to complete my Bowman stationary engines lineup - I need a 140 and a 167. Making an EKT/Oesterwitz workshop. Maybe another boat. Kitbashing my SL2.

And....learning lots more about the hobby from this great forum, the best steam forum in the world!

I didnt no you had a SL2 Moose
Griffin

For me 2007 saw a big change in the way my collection headed.

With the aquisition of a Jensen #55G in February, this some what opened the flood gates, as it was quickly succeeded by a few more comprising of :-

Jensen #25

A current Jensen #20G

Jensen #100 accessory set (Ex-Temple of Steam)

Jensen #5  ( Ex-Temple of Steam)

Jensen #10 ( Courtesy of Cedge)

For 2008, I do not see any further additions to the collection on the horizon, although a #95G turbine and a N&B Mamod TE1 would be nice.  If anything there may also be a few subtractions to the collection.  Well... famous last words anyway

Wilescoman_123

been a very good year ,brought my first engine in 1995 an mamod se1 after that found cars and beer .Starting collecting again this year gone from 1 to 13 mainly wilesco .2008 might buy a few mamods, really fancy a se3 .Going to do my first show this year at Leicester  pumping station looking forward to seeing the gang .Me and paprod hes my fathering-law should be there .
Mister Occlusion

Ah... I don't have any clear goals in mind.

I may or may not pick up a large Wilesco (d21 or d24) depending if or ifn't I find either a good classic D24 or a cheap D21.
The monster Fleischmanns are giving me a touch of an itch too..

If I find a decent Empire turbine in operating condition I might have a go.

Mainly I find myself drawn to the products of Jensen (should call themselves Jensen Ironworks  )

I would like to pick up a decent old 35 and 70 so I can switch out fireboxes on my old model 5 and 25, and the boiler on my 25.

For new engines?

I dunno... I'm lusting after a Model 50 (who wouldn't?)  but I doubt I could justify the cost of one unless I stumble upon one of those Deals Of The Century that seem to happen to people who aren't me.  2 - grand plus is rather up there in elite territory...

More realistically, perhaps, a 1940's Model 10.  Nothing specific in mind, other than getting a Real 10, with the direct drive generator, rather than the 25G precursor.

I am going to pick up a 65 to play with... Might even just buy a new one, since they're cheap enough (no hurry, though).

Model 95G is on the maybe list.  It's a cool thing to look at, but I'm sure I'll be chased out of the house with the noise it makes, not to mention the humidity it'll produce (got to be at least somewhat practical).

And there's another Jensen on the wish/lust list, though unfortunately it'll remain there forever

(... No, not a 51.  I would have to choose between having a 51 and having a bed to sleep on     ).

What have I got?

In order:
Wilesco D6
Old Fleischmann vertical (hand-me-down)
Old unknown engine (the "Through The Middle-type"...BTW, I can see daylight through the boiler, so no resto on this one...)
Old Smokey
D22
D455
Jensen 25 - modern
Empire B-30
Jensen 5
Jensen 85 (gifted away)
Jensen 25 - 1940's
Jensen 75
Mamod SR1
Mamod SE2a
Jensen 55
Jensen 25 - 1950's/60's(?)  Reversing
SteamCo STC101
Mamod S.E.3
Jensen 20R
Jensen 70 - parts engine (3 inch boiler)
Jensen 45 (in transit)
johnreid

O, how long have you been collecting, I think an award of sorts should be given

I did not list earlier
I had none in August and now have:

Wilesco D10 paid $75 and it was unused, the chimney and bits were in the sealed plastic bag, the burner was shiny!

SR1A paid $65 it arrived in unfired condition but missing the Steering Rod

another SR1A it arrived in unfired condition the burner had been damaged though but I repaired Paid $79

SE1A arrived with no burner but aside from that was in near perfect shape paid $27

Jensen 25 Cast base will not disclose price, but it was an unbelievable deal

Jensen 25G Wannabe started out with a 25 that I paid $20 for, add $20 parts ( spares ) and a $53 Jensen 15 Generator,

Jensen 75 paid $76 swapped parts off of it for my Jensen 25G wannabe project and is currently on Ebay I bet I come close to breaking even on it

I also have a OW1 Mamod trailer for the SR1As paid $24

I now want a Jensen 70 as I have no Oscillating Jensen, I think that at least as far as Jensens go, I am going to stick to the electrically heated models. I also want either a Jensen 100 or a Mamod Workshop, then my collecting will slow down a lot and I will plan on operating as opposed to buying.
MTA

I bought/acquired in 2007:

A brass flywheeled MM2
Mamod SW1
MF Steam Twin
Mamod RS3 set
Another one on the way (lips are sealed)
Mamod Railway Open Wagon
Stuart Turner 'Sun' Marine Engine

I am aiming to get in 2008:
Another Bowman
A Cyldon
Mamod SL2
Mamod 1948 SE1 ( )
Mister Occlusion

errr... been (not)collecting since late June this year?

--no, I'm not a Collector.  If I was, then my O/C tendencies would kick into *really* high gear...
TRAPPERKEEPER

I started in july this year and I have gotten in this order:

Mamod SR1A
Wilesco D405
Mamod TE1A
Mamod SW1
Wilesco D365 Old Smokey
Wilesco Log wagon

And after christmas I will have a used Jensen 75, Older wilesco D16, and a badly messed up SW1 (the usual missing parts) to try and fix up
Chris

I only started this year, so I bought my whole collection this year!

What are they?

2 SL1s
TE1a
SR1a
Luton Bowman
Mamod van (still not ran it!)
Mamod car
SE3 (on top of waldrobe needing repair and paint and well, everything)
Wilesco roller kit, which I am currently having a bit of bother with, not helped by not having the time at the moment.
Oh, and of course a couple of poppop boats.

Also bought a couple of trailers for the TE and SR, a mamod workshop and a bunch of rolling stock and track.

I'm not going to buy much for a while now, other priorities are eating money.

Really enjoying this hobby, which is helped by all the great folk here.  I will try and pop in more frequently again.
RocDoc

I only started this year as well.  My collection stands at two:

- Bowman Seahawk
- Burnac Vulcan

Next year ... go to the STiA in Feb ...  also would like acquire a stationary engine, hopefully a Bowman or SE3.

The main thing for me is all the help and friendly advice from everyone on this forum.  Ta very much.
Mamodman123

How did I miss this thread?

Noteable purchases for me this year have been the SC3, pre-war SE2 mostly thanks to a good friend  . Also picked up a nice 48 SE1 too!

Slowed down towards the end of the year though, holiday and car

2008? Nothing planned I take each day as it comes
Wallace

Great question Manxman.

So far purchased this year is:

Brass wheeled SE2 49/50 model.
Pre War SE1
Short engine Frame Brass wheeled SE2
Brass Wheeled Hammer
Brass wheeled lineshaft
Jensen 100 workshop
Jensen 75
46 SE1

Plans for the future is a SW1, possibly another Pre War engine, and any bargains to sell on in OZ.
steamyman

I've brought this year-

Jensen 75

DR Mercer Type 2

water bottle with hose & water topup valve

Graham Industries VR1 (assembled)

Globe valve and copper pipe.

traded a TE1a for a SR1.

next year I hope to-

have a axle drivin feed pump installed onto my oldest steam plant (by an engineer I know)

have a flexible connection on my gas burner.

SillyBilly

I've gained the following this year:
Mamod SL5 Prince of Wales
Mamod TE1A
Vertical/Horizontal Engine

I'm hoping that I'll have an Edrig on Christmas day.

Next Year I hope to see my SL1 & 2 return to steam, and hopfully an MM1.
Graham-Jilly

We started this year also went a bit over the top at the beginning. we bought 30 stationaries of which we have sold 4 7 loco's
8 TE's 4 SR1 4 SA1 and the od rolling stock track etc.
next year were having a holliday but im sure we might pick up something while were over there

we are concentrating on our garden railway which is where we will be concentrating our efforts in 2008 and hopefuly win the loto so we can buy a nice roundhouse Fowler or maybe an O Guage coal fired loco now that would be fun.
Reid

This mucker in Miami is Expectant for his First engine,
a new Wilesco D455

George Formby might've sung if I wrote for him,

I've another ukulele
In the ukulele way

If only that meant
pregnant, (wink)
I'd be a happy dad today!

Now here it's talk of engines
And so I tend to whine

The engine that I've ordered
won't break water for some time.
