Three cylinder SE3

As promised, I took a short clip of the SE3c runnung - just to prove that it does! Actually, it seems to be running a bit rough today; it can be a temperamental beast sometimes.

As you will see, I'm not the best of video cameramen. I think I'd be better sticking to stills

I was in a bit of a dilema after I'd uploaded the file from my camera to my PC and saw the file size was 14MB. My whole web space is only 15MB! Not tp be deterred, I've opened a You Tube account just for this clip (well, I might add to it later now that I've got it).

thanks roly, now we can watch the video any time!!

really nice , was toying with a four cyilinder for a while, just a idea i was going to put a balance tube from first to last cylinder

Not sure the boiler would take it Adam
James

2 boilers!! thatd be ace!!
newellsmamods

on the tests i'v done its no problem as its only equelizing the pressure

Yes and almost the same as having 2 se3's running next to eachother jimbo
James

sooo..... who cares? it would look good

SPOKESMAN

Good to see,is the vid stuttering or is it the cyclinder powerstroke uneveness causing it?

With 4 cylinders 2boilers may be appropriate 1 either side of 4 cylinders each feeding one of its own cylinders and one of the other boilers cylinders - else you would essentially have 2 seperate engines? A bettter poweer stroke balance could be achieved then perhaps?
James

i suggested 2 boilers. OR you could maybe do 1 se3 boiler and maybe a minor boiler??

Best to keep it even I think, A couple of SE3 boilers would be good! and add a forth cylinder like Mike said
James

i said that last night

Sounds very clunky in the video. Maybe the flywheel is a little too small, if he replaced it with another SE3 flywheel you will balance it a bit better
James

i didnt have sound on when i watched it

I thought about using all 4 cylinders when I did mine, but the cylinders would have to be 90 degrees apart, which would make it more tricky to join the crankshaft in the middle. You couldn't do it the same way as I did. One of the aims of my project was to use standard Mamod parts as far as possible.

You might not need two boilers. Obviously, more cylinders need more steam and mine goes slower than a standard SE3 for that reason. However, the point is, it's capable of going slower without stalling, and the same would apply to a four cylinder model, even more so. In fact, a 4 cylinder version might be good enough to be self starting - maybe. The other alternative would be to use a larger boiler, e.g. one from a Bowman M101?

There is one advantage with two boilers in that, if they each have their own throttles, then you can refill and fire up one while the other is powering the engine. In other words - continuous running is possible.

This is all heading towards serious model engineering rather than messing around with toys. I, personally, don't have the facilities (or the patience) to go down that route.

It was running rather roughly when I took the video. It was running a lot smoother just after I finished it, after I'd run it in (see the article on the web page). I had some problems with the alignment and rigidity of the joined up base when I was making it, and I had to put stiffeners underneath. Maybe, those problems are not 100% fixed. Another possibility is steam condensing the long length of pipe going to the last cylinder. I could try lagging it.

I don't think a bigger flywheel would help. After all, in theory, a 3 cyl engine should be quite happy with a smaller flywheel than a 2 cyl.

roly try a balance pipe, it will equeal the pressure from front to back on air tests on mine it worked fine, got the idea from real twin engines and even my car has one on the exhuste , its simple and it works.
newellsmamods

opps... also if you want it to run really slow put a throtle on the exhuest and that way the se3 boiler has no truble at all with produceing the pressure
Lewis

gread video mate realy looks good
