Thunderbirds at the ELRSomeone had the clever idea of using a single 08 on the EWS ballast train over the Ski jump, It was never going to happen. A call to InterLancashire rescue headquaters at Castlecroft yard and we end up with.......

Good job we were preparing for our diesel week or it could have taken a while longer to sort out.

Who ever thought an 08 could do serious work obviously needs their head checking out I didn't know the ELR played host to revenue earning freight trains, although you are going to have to explain what the Ski Jump is

I suspect the 'ski jump' is hill that is steep, bit like a ski jump.
However in defence of 08's I have seen one shift extremely heavy trains single handed up hill, (1,500 tonnes plus) on a daily basis without bother - admittedly it went very slowly - probably 5mph flat out - but it did not slip or stall. If you do not believe me take a trip to Rugby and watch (and hear!) it shunt the ballast or coal trains just to the North of the Station!!! I have never seen an 08 as routinely thrashed as that one!!

the ski jump is a ramp up over the metro link and the motorway a 9 coach rail tour with the duke onthe front needs banking up it it is so steep makes a ideal photo opportunity though but it was a necacerry evil to reach heywood the 08s in question are suposed to of had a d exaM AND THINGS THIS HAS JUST PROVE TO BE A REPAINT AND GENRAL MESS ABOUT with the inards that is why they are failing but they are knackerd really

Not in the slightest RS.
Your talking of an 08 trying to take over 1000T on its own over a 1 in 35. We knew it wernt going to happen when we were sat on 08944 shunting at Buckley Wells and watched 995 trundle past. People I know who work for EWS have even said it shouldnt have been done and that this was explaind to the contractors at the time.
Dont forget it had been raining too so rail conditions wernt the best either.
Just saying it wasnt clever to send 995 on her own to take the load.

If what you are saying is correct then I am not suprised it had problems!! There are only a very few mainline loco's that might be able to handle that kind of load on such a steep hill single handed. - Was it curved track as well for good measure? Whilst the one I refer to at Rugby was hauling more, it certainly was on something much less steep, and it was at its limit!
For that load a pair of 20's would probably have been the best bet!

Titan have you never been to the East Lancs?
The Heywood line is quite an interesting bit of line plenty of gradients and a nice steep curve heading into Bury itself. The 08 was bringing the train in from Heywood so as such it wasnt on any curves it was just at the start of the hill to go over the bridge over the Metrolink.
EWS themselves know that the 08 couldnt handle the train do there is a 60 outbased at Bury for picking up the train then the 08's do the drag back onto Metrolink. On the day in question the 60 was somewere on the Metrolink system and couldnt be sent up to pic up the train. Gave us a good laugh and the tractor got some thrash even though shes only running on 4 TMs.
