Tilford Toy Steam Rally - The PicsThe day went so quickly, I can't recall the events so I shan't bore you to death with a report.
I met so many people today, I can just about name them all!:
Paul (Minor1PJG) and his daughter Jordan
Mike (Boilertite)
Andy (andysleigh)
Ian (Mamodfan)
Steamman (with his impressive collection of german and english engines)
Colin Laker
Colin Sowman
Fred Crammond
Phil Gravett
Les Marsh (his Doll fountain was just like the one Jeremy Clarkson installed for Sir Steve Redgrave )
Steve (Kritika) with his rare and unique engines.
and many more...
The weather was bad to say the least, hail, sleet, wind and snow! Needless to say that all the exhibitios were inside, and I was lucky enough to be in the warmest building Along with steamman (a complete coincidence I can assure you ) and Paul & Jordan who joined us soon after, as we though it best to have the forum members clubbed together. I bought some engines, which you will have to look in my 2008 arrival thread in the pics board
A nice array of Wilesco tools.
A twin, horizontal Wormar.
These NG engines came from the Lydd ranges in Kent. Yes, that is snow on the ground
Steamman's collection. Some truly unique and desireable engines
Some more Wormar's (I can understand why people like these engines!)
The snow is falling! Apologies in advance for the boy in the foreground, we had to share the building with him and his dad and he was a bit annoying to say the least...
Steamman's SE4 (various jealous mumblings)
Orenstein & Koppel 0-6-0WT Elouise running on the Old Kiln Light Railway's new extension.
Paul's stand. I was rather annoyed when I missed him steaming up his Latimer Plane L5.
This engine rather caught me eye, it looked so clean and superb in everyway.
A rather nice Doll.
My stand, I didn't get to steam as much as I thought I would.
This would be a nice scene to model...
A larger version of a Lilliput!
Steamman's absolutely huge Marklin. I considered putting my Jenny Wren next to it as a contrast but you probably wouldn't have noticed the Jenny Wren
A rather large Meccano display.
A good friend of mine's Gauge 1 0-6-0T. Loosely based on a LB&SCR E2.
Fred Crammond's Mamod Meteor. Owing to the weather the boating lake wasn't erected. The next picture demonstrates as to why Fred was a bit disheartened:
I believe they are all his!
Heed the warning...
Steamman's Doll (?) Horizontal Overtype. I really liked this engine. The reason for the MSS tablets and the bottle of oil and tweezers is to stop the levers from falling open
For Manxman, some Dave Butcher engines!
For Jim:
Jim would have been on cloud nine today, there were at least 5 D32's on site
A 4 1/2" scale Burrell was giving rides.
Steamman's lovely Bowman 234 in the middle...
As Bugs Bunny would say 'That's all folks!'

MTA

Thanks MM
Some people did get some bargains (Steve for example, with his TE1).
Some lucky sod though bought a Lilliput from a friend of mine for £25. Best keep my eyes and ears open next year!
Les took some pics, I think Paul took a couple as well. As to whether we shall see Fred's pics is anyone's guess

Depends on how long it takes for him to sail back
Couldn't resist
I wondered what that yellow bad was Thought you'd been shopping at Netto
|
MTA
|
Netto?!
Speaking of boats and jokes, when Ian came over to see me we were talking about the Mersey and Colin also had an original Bowman Snipe for sale.
I said I would be interested in the boat, but went for the Mersey as I wouldn't be able to use the boat.
Then Ian said 'Ahh, whatever floats your boat really' having not realised the topic of the discussion

Well, you would have been better off coming when it wasn't snowing etc. as we are usually outside in the sun etc.
By the way, I was the only person walking around in just a polo shirt, jeans etc. Everyone else had at least 2 layers on

If I was there I would have insisted on burning the D32 to keep warm

It was great to meet you MTA today and Minor 1PJG and Les Marsh.
I'm sure I meet some more of you but most likely can't remember!! sorry
It was great to see five D32's!!!, Both mine and my friend Owen Robert's were in steam, but the whistle was a little to loud for the room we were in!!
There was a lovely marklin steam engine on display in one of the rooms with a double action cylinder, feed-pump and governor, which I offered £20.00 for but didn't get!!!
I have spent the evening cleaning and oiling my Doll overtype and marklin engines, which I steamed today. all part of the fun!!
I didn't get around to steaming any of my pre-war british engines, german won the day!!!. theres always next year!!
|
steamman
|
Some lovely, lovely LOVELY!!!!!! PRE-WAR GERMAN ENGINES!!!
The Marklin I wanted was is on the far left, I think £20.00 is a fair price, dont you!!
|
MTA
|
You know more than I about German engines so I can't make a comment about your offer!
MM, it is a rather large place, I'd say it is about 1/4 in size of Amberley (Amberley being 36 acres...)
|
steamman
|
There was also this great display, does this belong to a forum member?
MTA- I saw you connect your music box to an engine during the day but wasn't able to come over and look. What tune does it play?
After seeing your great new Plane L4 in steam I think I had better find one!!
|
MTA
|
It didn't work so well, as the SE2 does not have such a fine control regulator.
The tune is 'La Vie en Rose'. Forest Classics sell them, but they are not listed on his website.
I do not think the stand next to mine belonged to a forum member I'm afraid
|

Nice display!
I have one of the little doll engines at the front-thats the only other identical one i've seen
Aye i wouldn't pay any more than £20.00 for that Marklin
|
Manxman
|
Great pics MTA and thanks for the Butcher pics. The Traction Engine seems to be rarer than the Steam Roller so thanks for that.

No problem Manx. As soon as I saw them I instantly thought 'Manxman!'
I can understand why people like them, particularly the one in brown seeing as it is based on a prototype (Tasker 'Little Giant' for those that don't know...)

Thanks for showing us the pics MTA, some very nice and rare engines there. It looks like a good event!

It was a great day, my daughter couldn't believe it was time to go as we only been there 7.5 hours
I have a few pictures which I'll add tomorrow. Good to catch up with everyone and to steam some engines.
I bought a bit of meccano so I make something steam based in the next few weeks

I would also like to mention that I had the great pleasure to meet Mr Jenn Wren Lilliput himself - Mr Phil Gravett (thanks Simon for introducing him).
Phil took the time to tell me a little about himself (a tool maker) and that he'd just made a few engines for pleasure and to sell over ten years ago. He said that he had some materilas left over from that time and thought he'd use them up and see if he could sell a few more. Since STIA and Roly's public running of these engines Phil said he's been pleasantly surprised at the level of interest in his engines and so does plan to re-make the Beam Engine
Phil did say that he has received at least one advanced order for a Beam Engine (You know who you are - living across the water, growing up in Rumford ).
Phil introduced me to his wife and daughter too and showed me his experimental box with a whole host of miniture engines he'd "just roughly turned out" and needless to say they were magnificent. I did thing of Moose when he showed me the miniture V twin marine engine
What a great day

MTA,
Thanks for the great pics.
Really enjoyed this thread.
Nice collection there, Paul
Anyone got any pictures of Les and his collection? I've seen so many 'teasers' from him I'd really like to see it all together.
|
MTA
|
I wasn't able to get any pictures of Les' collection. Everytime I went to take a photo there were people standing around it
I believe Les took some pics though, although he hasn't been on today so we should be seeing his anyday now
|

Les even has a new camera, I would think that he took some photos as he said he would.
|
steamman

The Marklin is model 4161/94/11 built between 1923 -1928 and produced with or without a dynamo. There is a thread in the restoration page about the future reastoration!!!

Some of the forum members I saw yesterday asked where we bought our industrial meths. I have put a thread in the technical tips section and hope it helps!!!!!

A few photos, mainly Forum orientated.
I've split them between the two main forums (fora?) on the grounds that I am too lazy to do it all twice and I think most people use both fora anyway. But I can't resist putting this one on both.
Ah! The English Spring!
