As the Zig Zag Railway is building a new loco, they need to find new ways of getting enough money to pay for it, and they think they have come up with a good idea.
Now thats a pretty big base board, but what has it got to do with Steam engines and the ZZR?

Looks like we better double the security patrols then.
Now the ZZR quite often puts on family fun days, but as they plan to make some serious money this time they realised they needed to up the anti.
They recently acquired a Stuart Turner 10V and a 504 boiler so they had a good sized power house to run something big.
They also heard of an old fair ground ride that had being lying languishing under the desk unfinished, enquires were made, deals were struck and a few months were spent finishing and restoring it.
It was then time for a test run without the public.
It was found it required extra weight on the large pulley to make the friction drive work so pewter weights were temporarily placed there for the test run.

Very unique Tony, it even operated at near scale speed and seemed to oscillate up and down like the real thing. Well done!

Yes if you look at the top of the ride you can see an xles offset that rotates around at a slower speed than the arms, this is what makes the arms go up and down.
I'm very pleased with how it turned out.

As I mentioned above to make the ride work properly it needed extra weight put on the friction drive.
For the test run I just places a couple of pewter ingots on it.
Now the paying public wouldn't of liked that so a more permanent setup for the weight was required.
First I cut a circular hole out of a bit of scrap wood.
Next in a second bit of wood I drilled a 31/32 inch hole and knocked a bit of 1/2 inch dowel into the hole.
It was then set up ready to pour a new weight.
I didn't use my expensive pewter but some car tyre weights and some tin lead mix of metal I have had for years was used.
Freshly poured and still semi molten.
New weight fitted.
Now ready for phase two test.

I love the Octopus Tony but I would definitely needed a bag with me on that ride.

Oh, you brought carnival memories from when I was a boy, Tony.
Memories of me barfing cotton candy pink & peanuts. I've always
hoped I'd grow out of that!!
What the heck! Spin her up again and I'll give it another go...
Sandman
What a great idea Tony.
That worked a treat mate.
The video was spot on and the music just perfect.
Atticman
Great video Tony, I knew some jewelry had to come into the trial run

Absolutely well done. I too am impressed with the near scale speed.

The piano player last year and a complicated fair ride this year
It seems that there is no end to your imaginative ingenuity Tony
That's the engine and boiler that your grandfather owned isn't it?

Yes it is my grandfathers.
The Stuart needs a bit more work on it yet and the second video which I will put up before the end of the event blew all the graphite yarn out of the gland around the piston rod.
So it needs to be repacked before I run it again.
I repacked the steam chest gland before but not the gland around the piston rod, and I guess its nearing 30 years old it had just rotted.

Here is test two of the Roundabout, fitted with the cast weight.
I think it makes the run slightly smoother.
Sandman
Certainly an improvement in the overall look of the ride Tony.
